The Most Beautiful Love Story: Reading Ryosyu was published in Japan recently. This book assert that Ryosyu written by Yokomitsu Riichi is the most beautiful love story in this world. These blunders require the critical intervention on Reading of Ryosyu. Adaptation issues are discussed mainly in this paper. We checked into the problem of Censorship and Deletion after the Second World War(ChapterⅡ). Investigation on First verson of Ryosyu, we found out there had been adaptation for remodeling the characters. Through all these considerations, we argue that Reading Ryosyu as the most beautiful love story is misreading(ChapterⅢ, Ⅳ). Though we doubt that authenticity of the recent evaluation on Ryosyu, however, Ryosyu need to be shed new light in the concept of reinvention of the character Yashiro. In the result, a newly modified character of Yashiro was excavated and new possibilities of Ryosyu were presented(ChapterⅤ). Struggles over Ryosyu would be continued.

2004年の日本で『世界で最も美しい恋愛小説─『旅愁』を読む』と題した本が出版された。横光利一『旅愁』の主人公男女が登場する場面を抜粋・再構成した結果、それが｢世界で最も美しい恋愛小説｣であるということなのだが、このような現実こそが小説『旅愁』に対する批判的介入を未だに必要としつづけているのである。本稿は改稿問題を手がかりに、小説『旅愁』への批判的読解を試みたものである。第Ⅱ章では、戦後の検閲と削除の問題を考察した。第Ⅲ章と第Ⅳ章では、初出から戦前版単行本所収の段階における改稿問題を通して、久慈と千鶴子という作中人物像の改変を指摘した。そのうえで『旅愁』を｢恋愛小説｣として読むという試みが小説の生成過程を無視した極めて偏狭なものにすぎないことを明らかにした。では、『旅愁』の新たなる読み直しはいかに可能か。第Ⅴ章においてこれまでの研究で見過されてきた、外部に開かれた出会いを体験しえた主人公の矢代像を新たに見い出すことで、小説『旅愁』の初出稿が秘めていた可能性を提示した。発表からすでに半世紀以上が経った現在、改めてこの小説を論じる意義があるとするならば、それは新たな矢代像に象徴されるような、可能態として『旅愁』を読み直すことにこそある。横光利一『旅愁』をめぐる闘争はいまなお続いている。
