Translating Promotional Website : A Case Study of the Official Website of Boryeong Mud Festival
초록
영어
This study looks into some translation examples found on the English website of Boryeong Mud Festival as a way to highlight four important considerations that translators are advised to bear in mind when working on event titles and promotional phrases written in Korean. The categories of such considerations are derived from a set of questions that translators need to ask themselves before they set out to translate words and phrases of the sort. The considerations relate to: i) the importance of translating the function and the inherent quality, not the words, ii) the translator's judgement on the importance of the source text information, iii) the transferring of cultural items and compensation for translation loss, and iv) the condensation of redundant or unnecessarily long phrases. Every textual element of the source text chosen as a sample in this study is not a sentence in its conventional sense, but a series of words. This is attributable to the specific layout of the website and resulting lack of space, which inevitably poses certain translation constraints. In such a translation situation, the success of a potential translation depends mainly on whether the translator can find appropriate words and phrases. As a basis for this discussion, the concepts of equivalence and context are briefly dealt with in separate sections.
