It is expected that a new model of pastoral counseling which is understood under the perspective and framework of idolatry and practices therapeutic methods secures theological basis well at first and produces adequate and effective results. Even though in general aspects of counseling a secular counselor depends on largely how to understand human being and his or her problems, in pastoral counseling a pastoral counselor needs to look at more how to understand God and experience divine relationships. In this thesis, accompanying theories of God and redemption which are the very core of Christian doctrine, the researcher tries to integrate theoretical models in depth psychological standpoint. Primary task of pastoral counseling is to challenge idolatry and let the clients get out of the worship of false gods. As psychological resistance against therapeutic change, grabbing wrong recognition concerning to ultimate meaning of life stubbornly, clients’fixation on idolatry is often appeared in the course of counseling. Here, pastoral counselor should help his or her clients to accept the manner in which the clients are justified by God’s love and grace. Moreover, we can pray in proper ways when the distortion about the image of God we have is corrected. Even if challenging idolatry is sometimes tiresome and difficult work, it can be joyous work in which we discover our true self connected with God who gives us love and freedom. Pastoral counselor should help someone who stuck in pathological fixation to be liberated from and have a changed mind focused on the love of living God.

목회상담을 우상숭배라는 틀과 관점에서 이해하고 치료적 접근을 모색하는 상담방식은 먼저 신학적 기반을 잘 갖추면서 치료적으로도 적절하고 큰 효과를 가져 올 수 있다고 기대된다. 상담에 대한 일반적인 관점은 상담자가 궁극적으로 인간을 어떻게 이해하고 그들이 지닌 문제를 어떤 방식으로 보느냐에 크게 의존하고 있지만, 목회상담에서는 오히려 인간이 어떻게 하나님을 이해하고 어떤 방식의 관계경험을 하고 있는지를 더욱 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 목회상담에서 여러 다양한 상담모델과 방법론을 선택하기도 하고, 관련된 신학적 주제를 살펴보기도 하는데, 본 논문에서는 우상숭배의 틀과 관점에서 상담을 이해하고 전개해 나가는 방식을 중심으로 다루어보고자 한다. 그래서 기독교신학의 핵심인 신론과 구원론을 동반하면서 이를 심층심리학의 입장에서 통합시켜보려는 학문적 방법론을 시도해 보고자 한다. 목회상담의 한 가지 기본 과업은 우상숭배에 도전하는 것으로, 내담자로 하여금 심리 내면적인 거짓 신들에 대한 예배로부터 벗어나도록 돕는 것이다. 자기 자신에 대한 잘못된 시각은 하나님에 대한 자신의 잘못된 시각과 서로 얽혀 있어 우상숭배는 잘못된 자아형성을 이끌지만, 하나님의 사랑은 참된 자아를 풍성한 생명 속으로 초청한다. 한편 상담과정에서 발생하는 우상숭배에 대한 집착은 삶의 궁극적 의미에 대한 잘못된 인식을 고집스럽게 붙들면서 치료적 변화에 대한 심리적 저항으로 나타나게 된다. 여기서 우리는 인정받기를 간절히 원하면서 자신을 의롭다고 여기는 방식을 선택하므로 상담자는 내담자를 사랑과 은혜에 의해 의롭다함을 받는 방식을 받아들이도록 도와주어야 한다. 또한 우리가 갖고 있는 하나님의 이미지에 대한 왜곡이 고쳐질 때 기도도 올바르게 할 수가 있다. 우상과 대결하는 작업은 때로 힘들고 어려운 일이지만, 우리를 사랑하시고 자유롭게 하시는 하나님과 연결된 우리의 진정한 자아를 발견케 하는 즐거운 일이 될 수가 있다. 상담자는 살아계신 하나님의 사랑에 초점을 맞춘 마음을 갖도록 삶에 있어서 잘못된 고착에 빠져 있는 사람들을 자유롭게 하도록 도와야 한다.
