This article is about a study of relevance between Calvin’s understanding of human being and its application to the contemporary understanding of human being for pastoral care. What are the understandings of human nature in Calvin and their significances for pastoral care? Where can we find the sources of Calvin’s understandings of human being in the viewpoint of pastoral care? Reflecting these questions, this article focuses on Calvin’s understandings of human being in a perspective of pastoral care with Imago Dei as the center. The second chapter deals with the ideological backgrounds of Calvin’s understandings of humanity: Humanism as his academical foundation, psychological experience as his piety and God-consciousness, Bible and Tradition as his ecclesial theology. The third chapter examines the characteristics of Calvin’s understandings of humanity: Human being from the perspectives of doctrine of creation(the glorious human), human being from the viewpoint of soteriology(the existential human), and human being in the perspective of eschatology(the hopeful human). The forth chapter explores the necessity of the new perspective of a human as the object of pastoral care and a new approach to human ethics as pastoral care and church community, suggesting that Calvin was a consoler of the ones who was experiencing anxiety and the sufferers, theologian who willingly had conversation with humanism of his contemporary culture in arguing for his understanding of theological human being. In conclusion, the necessity of the further profound study about how Calvin’s understanding of human being could contribute to the care of soul of today in the perspective of pastoral care is suggested.

본 논문은 칼뱅의 인간이해를 살펴보면서 그것이 오늘날 목회적 돌봄(Pastoral Care)을 위한 인간 이해에 어떻게 적용될 수 있을지에 대해 살펴보았다. 칼뱅은 인간을 어떻게 이해했으며, 그것의 현대 목회적 돌봄의 의미는 무엇인가? 목회적 돌봄을 위한 칼뱅의 인간이해의 근거는 어디에서 찾을 수 있는가? 본 논문은 이러한 질문들을 숙고하면서 목회적 돌봄으로서의 칼뱅의 인간이해에 초점을 맞추되, 하나님의 형상(Imago Dei)의 이해에 한정하여 살펴보았다. 제2장에서는 칼뱅의 인간이해의 사상적 배경으로서, 학문적 바탕으로서의 인문주의, 경건에 대한 의식으로서의 심리적 경험, 교회의 신학으로서의 성서와 전통에 대해 살펴보았다. 제3장에서는 칼뱅의 인간이해의 특징으로서 창조론적인 관점에서의 인간존재(영광스런 인간), 구원론적인 관점에서의 인간존재(실존적인 인간), 종말론적인 관점에서의 인간존재(소망적인 인간)에 대해 연구했다. 제4장에서는 목회적 돌봄의 대상으로서의 인간성에 대한 새로운 시각의 필요성, 목회적 돌봄으로서의 인간윤리와 교회 공동체에 대한 새로운 접근을 살펴보았다. 또한 불안을 경험했던 칼뱅은, 자신의 경험을 살려 고통을 당하는 사람들을 위로해 주었으며, 자신의 신학적 인간이해를 주장함에 있어서 당시의 문화(인문주의)와 기꺼이 대화했던 신학자요, 영혼의 치유자(Healer of Soul)였음을 밝혔다. 결론 부분에서는 목회적 돌봄의 측면에서 칼뱅의 인간이해가 오늘날 영혼의 돌봄(Care of Soul)에 어떤 측면을 기여할 수 있을지 보다 심오하고 구체적인 연구의 필요성을 제기했다.
