It is imperative for the Church to grow incessantly throughout the world and age to age. While Korean churches have grown very drastically, they are now blamed for unhealthy outcomes due to excessively quantity-oriented growth so far. And, facing the recent decrease in numbers of the Christian population, they are in the desperate need of responding to this reality with a new prospect in theological methods and its practical strategies. From pastoral perspective, to begin with, firstly, there should be the change in perspective and understanding about church growth. Secondly, they need to pay attention more to social concerns and practices caring the neighbors in need. It seems to be required of particularly in that the Church are recently facing severe hostilities and offensive attitudes against her in our society. But far more important reason for the need of such effort is based on the spirit of the unconditional love of Christ for the world. Thirdly, the Korean churches should be equipped with new understandings and strategies about the contemporary ministrial field that are enclosed by new media or cultural environment. From liturgical perspective, firstly, it is very crucial whether or not the Christian worship holds on to its essential identity steadily in that it is the most influential upon the life of the congregation because of its central role for them. For this purpose, the Church needs to refer to the liturgical traditions through the diachronic examination of them. Secondly, worship should deal actively and quickly with the fast changing environment for its application with more open-minded attitudes. Finally, it should be understood that worship practices cannot be confined only to ordained ministers within the visible buildings but also be allowed under the leadership of the laity leaders in their own work places. Through all these efforts, the Church will be helped to deal with the challenges more effectively and then secure more firmly the church growth in the future.

교회가 지속적으로 성장해야 한다는 것은 당연한 것이다. 한국교회는 지금까지 놀랄만한 성장을 거듭해 왔지만 주로 양적성장에 주력해 왔다. 최근 성장이 지체된 가운데 다시 한번 교회성장을 위한 목회와 예배 분야에서의 바른 전략과 실천이 필요하다. 먼저 목회적 관점에서 성장에 관한 인식의 변화가, 그리고 신학적 지평 확대가 필요하다. 둘째는, 오늘날 교회 밖의 기독교에 대한 비호의적, 적대적 환경 하에서 기독교 사회봉사에 대한 관심의 확대가 필요하다. 무조건적 사랑에 기초한 대사회적 봉사는 기독교의 핵심적 정체성이기도 하다. 셋째로 목회의 영역을 좀 더 거시적 관점에서 이해하는 노력이 필요하다. 즉 다양한 목회에 대한 개방적이고 포괄적인 태도가 필요하며 아울러 평신도의 리더십을 충분히 계발시켜서 그들로 하여금 교회의 활동 외연을 넓혀 나갈 수 있도록 지원하는 것이 필요하다. 예배적 관점에서 교회성장을 살펴보자면, 예배가 신앙생활의 중심부에 있다는 점에서 예배는 정체성이 확고해야 하는데 이는 통시적 전통의 조망에서 찾을 수 있으며 교회성장의 주요 전제가 된다 할 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 예배는 변화하는 세상 가운데 그 형식이나 내용 면에서 능동적으로 적응하여 나아감으로써 동태적 신학 면모를 갖추어야 한다. 마지막으로는 예배는 단지 건물로서의 교회 안에 국한되지 말고 세상 전역에서 모든 피조물에 의한 경배라는, 예배의 궁극적 이상을 따라서 교회 밖 삶의 터전에서 평신도들의 적극적인 리더십이 허용되는 가운데 다양한 양식의 예배들로 허용될 수 있어야 한다. 이와 같이 목회와 예배에 대한 성찰과 변화 노력이 이루어질 때 미래 교회 성장은 더욱 확고하게 될 수 있다고 본다.
