This study empirically tests new-found global banking relationships from the perspective of ‘knowledge-seeking’ and tells us about the fundamental motivation of selecting Joint Venture(JV) as a preferred entry mode. In doing so, the potential usefulness of this study is threefold. First, it extends current literature on global banking industry, by systematically applying foreign direct investment theories to the commercial banking industry and articulating with the field of strategic management. Second, it greatly increases the ability to generalize research outcomes by incorporating data across a large number of countries including both developed and emerging countries. Lastly, it provides a fresh insight by focusing on the Mode-Knowledge-Conduct(M-K-C) relationship as a key variable. A finding from this study says that banks' preference to select an entry mode is positively and partially correlated to firm-specific and internalization-specific advantages. Results also show that organizational learning(intellectual assets) exerts an direct influence(+) on the selection of an entry mode, whilst it partially plays a role of an moderator(+) on the specific advantages-entry mode relationship.

이 연구는 글로벌은행의 해외시장 진입모드 결정에 관한 근본적 동기로 ‘지식추구’ 관점에서 합작투자의 선호에 대한 실증분석을 시도한다. 이 과정에서 이 연구는 기존 해외직접투자 이론을 전략경영 관점과 접목함으로써 학제간적 이론의 확장을 꾀한다. 또한 다수의 선진국 및 신흥국 상업은행을 연구대상으로 하는 교차국가 연구를 통해 일반화의 수준을 제고하며, 해외시장 진입모드-지식추구-성과 간 관계에 주목하는 새로운 고찰을 시도한다. 분석결과 진입모드로서 합작투자에 대한 은행의 선호는 기업특유우위 및 내부화우위 요소에 의해 부분적으로 정(+)의 관계를 지니며, 조직학습효과(지적자산 제고)는 진입모드 선택에 대해 정(+)의 직접효과를 미치는 동시에 특유우위-진입모드선택 간 관계를 부분적으로 조절(+)하는 것으로 나타났다
