This research addresses a hypothesis that the export intention of the parent company will increase the management control of subsidiaries and this will again, affect the decision of increasing the product development dependency of the subsidiary which will eventually increase the import intensity towards the parent company. The results of the path analysis implemented among the firm level data, of the 385, possessed by KOTRA shows proof of the established hypothesis. In this case, if the parent company chooses to do foreign direct investment (equity participation) as an detour strategy against the export barriers of the foreign country, it will increase the amount of control of the subsidiaries (wholly owned subsidiaries or majority shared ventures). And this will help to understand the parent company’s strategy, which by showing an passive attitude towards R&D of the subsidiaries, based on the amount of control; it would eventually come to the result to relatively increase the dependency (import intensity) towards the parent company.

본고는 모기업이 자회사 및 현지 합작회사에 대한 수출성과를 촉진하는 상황에 대한 분석에 연구의 초점을 맞추고 있다. 자회사의 생산 경쟁력, 특히 연구개발 능력이 높을수록 자회사 및 현지 합작회사는 본사에 의존하지 않고 독자적으로 국제시장에 제품을 수출할 가능성이 높다. 모기업이 현지 합작선에 대해 높은 통제권을 매개로 합작선의 본사에 대한 공급사슬 의존도를 높이는 전략을 채택할 시 합작선의 연구개발 여건은 상대적으로 취약할 수 있음이 본고의 연구가설이다. 실증분석은 385개의 KOTRA 기업 데이터를 사용하여 3개의 경로분석(path analysis) 모형을 AMOS 패키지를 통해 통계분석을 실시하였다. 실증분석 결과로부터 가설에서 설정한 경로의 경로계수 부호가 예상대로 일치하며 통계적 유의수준을 만족하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
