How can foreign subsidiaries of small and medium enterprises(SME) improve the competitive advantage? This paper has analysed the management tasks and action plans of foreign subsidiaries based on the survey data of 100 subsidiaries of Korean SMEs in Vietnam. The results are as follows; foreign subsidiaries try to improve the competitive advantage through obtaining and exploiting their management resources, through exploiting rather than obtaining their management resources, through obtaining local resources rather than parent company's resources, through exploiting human resources rather than tangible and intangible resources, through previous local experiences. Therefore, Korean SMEs have to focus on exploiting their own resources, especially human resources, and obtaining local resources after accumulating enough local experiences before entering a foreign market through foreign direct investment.

중소기업 해외자회사는 어떻게 경쟁우위를 확보하고 향상시켜 나가는가? 베트남에 진출한 한국 중소기업 100개 기업에 대한 설문조사를 바탕으로 이들의 경영관리과제와 대응방안을 분석한 결과 해외자회사들은 경영자원 확보와 활용을 통해 경쟁우위 향상을 도모하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 자원확보 보다는 자원활용을 통해서, 본사자원보다는 현지자원 확보를 통해서, 유무형 자원보다는 인적자원의 활용을 통해서 경쟁우위 향상을 도모하고 있었다. 사전진출 경험이 많을수록 외국비용을 줄이고 자원확보 및 활용에 유리하기 때문에 해외자회사의 경쟁우위가 향상되는 것으로 분석되었다. 따라서 기업특유의 독점적 우위가 부족한 한국 중소기업들은 해외진출하기 이전부터 현지관련 경험을 축적한 다음 현지자원을 효과적으로 확보할 수 있는 그리고 보유자원을 최대한 활용할 수 있는 경영관리활동에 집중하여야 할 것이다.
