At the beginning of the twentieth century, writers from both South Korea and China began to adopt new approaches for their creative works thanks to the influence of western culture. Chae Man-shik and Lao She are the representatives of the literary world in Korea and China in thirties of the twentieth century. They not only inherited their tradition of their native lands but also adopted new approaches creatively in their literary works, leaving a lot of excellent wealth behind. Both of the heroes, Chobong and Xiangzi from their representative works and embark on the road of degeneration after their respective three setbacks. The two heroes’psychological changes which take place in the process of their degeneration are depicted in detail in both of the works. Based on this observation, the paper is intended to compare the techniques used in the two works including the psychological representations of the narrators of the two stories, direct and indirect representation of psychology and the representation of the changes in heores’ inner worlds with the development of the plots. Then the paper is to probe into the similarities and differences. Both Chae Man-shik and Lao She used various techniques to show the inner worlds of their characters to make them lifelike and true to life. However, there exist some differences between their psychological representations.

20세기 초에 한국과 중국 작가들은 서양문학의 영향을 받아 모두 새로운 기법으로 작품들 을 창작하기 시작했다. 채만식과 노사는 1930년대에 한국과 중국을 대표하는 작가로서 자국 의 전통을 계승하여 독특한 창작 방법으로 우수한 작품을 남겼다. 그들의 대표작품 <탁류>와 <낙타상자>에서 주인공 초봉과 상자는 모두 세 번의 타격으로 인해 타락해 버렸고, 두 작품 에는 이러한 몰락의 과정에서 두 사람의 복잡하고 고통스러운 심리의 변화가 잘 그려지고 있 다. 본고는 이런 점에 착안하여 두 작품의 심리표현 방법을 비교하고자 한다. 두 작품에 들어 있는 심리표현 상의 특징을 이야기꾼으로서의 심리표현법, 심리활동의 직접 표현, 심리활동의 간접 표현 및 사건발전에 따른 심리표현 등 네 가지 차원에서 규명한 다음에 그 유사성과 변 별성을 살펴봤다. 채만식과 노사는 모두 다양한 기법으로 작중 인물의 심리세계를 많이 묘사 함으로써 생동감 있는 인물을 창조하고 있으나 그들이 사용하고 있는 심리 표현 방법은 약간 씩의 차이를 보이고 있다.
