This manuscript discusses research methodology of classical literature and understanding on classical literature of Taejoon Kim. By limiting literature in Joseon Dynasty in Korean literature, Taejoon Kim applied the range to lyric writingㆍnarrationㆍplay, which is a Western classification system. But as he separately classified myth, legend, ancient history and unofficial historical tale that cannot be applied there, there are actually 4 classifications system. Fundamentally the classification was based on Western literature type but it also relfected distinctive characteristics of literature in Joseon Dynasty. Predicating upon global universality, Taejoon Kim held fast to the viewpoint to Joseon society. On literary concept or classification, as he interpreted the literature in Joseon Dynasty in accordance with Western literary theory, Taejoon Kim attempted to acquire worldly universality. he considered that is modernization and a way to be rid of being a colony. Following universal rules, research methods of literature also sticks to a socilaistic viewpoint. Deviating from traditional method of literary research, Taejoon Kim found scientific research method, and that method is a socilaistic view of history on literature based on socio-economic perspective.
This research method was considered to contribute to development of real life therefore it maintained a practical attitude toward literary research.

본고는 김태준이 남긴 백여 편의 논저 가운데 문학 관련 논문을 중심으로 해서 고전문학에 대한 인식과 고전문학 연구방법론에 대해 논한 글이다. 김태준은 조선문학을 국문문학에 한정지으면서 그 범위를 서양의 분류법인 서정ㆍ서사ㆍ극에 적용하여 가요ㆍ소설ㆍ희곡으로 한정하였다. 그런데 여기에 적용할 수 없는 신화, 전설, 고사, 야담류를 따로 분류해 실질적으로는 4분류 체계를 세우고 있다. 기본적으로는 서구의 문학 유형에 입각한 분류가 이루어졌지만 조선문학의 특수성을 반영한 결과인 셈이다. 김태준은 세계사적 보편성에 입각해 조선 사회를 바라보려는 시각을 견지하고 있었다. 문학의 개념이나 분류에서도 서구 중심의 문학이론에 맞추어 조선문학을 해석함으로써 세계사적 보편성을 획득하려고 했던 것이다. 이것이 근대화이고 식민지를 벗어나는 길이라고 여긴 것이다. 문학 연구방법 또한 세계사적 보편법칙을 따르다 보니 사회주의적 시각을 견지하고 있다. 전통적인 문학연구방법에서 벗어나 과학적인 연구방법을 찾았고, 그 방법이 바로 사회경제사적 입장을 바탕으로 한 사회주의 문학사관이었다. 이 연구방법은 현실 생활의 발전에 기여하는 것으로 여겼고, 그에 따라 문학 연구에 있어 실천적 자세를 견지한 것이다.
