This study intended to explore re-adjustment process and critical factors affecting this process among the adolescents discharged from a youth detention center. In this study, several interviews were conducted with the six adolescents who did not engage in delinquent behaviors again within one year after they were discharged from the detention center. With the qualitative study method, in-depth interviews were carried out to understand what they experienced and how they dealt with various difficulties. This study attempted to identify effective intervening measures for preventing relapses and to provide suggestions to enhance the social adjustment skills among the adolescents. As the results, 16 classes, 38 sub-classes and 118 concepts were identified. The main phenomenon was ‘severe wavering’, the causal relationship were ‘insight’, "unspecified plan after detention centers" and "habits of delinquency". And contextual conditions were 'narrow human relationships' and 'poor supporting systems'. Arbitration conditions were 'having unusual experiences', 'sensing time pass by' and 'taking time for retrospection'. Dealing strategies were ‘receiving helping hands', 'struggling trials to improve relationship'. and the result were ‘building a positive view of life', ‘formation of the satisfactory relationship', ‘identifying goals in real life' and ‘marching forward boldly'. The core value is found from selective coding; marching forward with struggles coming from the tension of retrospection. What we can conclude is that the graduates' social adjustment does not change easily. Thus, they struggle by themselves, only maintaining a tension not to commit the crime again, without any professional helps except those from the family and the volunteers. Several suggestions were made. First, it is necessary to help them make a specific, and realistic plan for post-discharge with their family or care givers when leaving the detention center. Second, it is necessary to wisely utilize the support from the 'old friends' as needed. Trying to separate adolescent from old peer relationships may not necessarily be the best solution. Third, professional's helps should be connected with the resources of local community. Fourth, early intervention with social services is needed to facilitate breaking the vicious cycle of the crime. Fifth, it is necessary to help the teenagers without the opportunity of proper education keep realistic career minds, and develop appropriate jobs for them. Last, with the cooperation between the detention center and social service agencies, follow-up services should be provided, which should last at least for a year after discharge from the center.

본 연구는 소년원 퇴원생의 사회적응과정을 탐색하고자, 퇴원 후 1년 이상 재범을 하지 않고 사회에 잘 적응한 청소년을 대상으로 심층 면접을 통해 질적 연구를 하였다. 연구 참여자는, 소년원 내에서 상담 프로그램에 참여하였던 소년원 퇴원생들 중에서 ‘접근 가능한 의도적 추출 방법’으로 선정하였다. 소년원 내에서 2005년부터 2009년까지 실시했던 상담프로그램에 참여하였던 청소년 총 98명 중, 본 연구의 이론적 표본 추출에 적합한 학생은 48명이었으며, 그 중 12명의 청소년과 만나 보호자로부터 구술 동의, 혹은 방문 서명 동의를 얻었지만, 최종적으로 6명과 녹음을 하게 되었다. 자료 수집은 2009년 8월~ 2010년 5월까지 1~3회 만나서 심층 면접을 실시하였고, 필요한 경우 전화와 이 메일로 연락하여 자료를 보강하였다. 근거이론에 의한 자료 분석 결과, 개방 코딩에서는 118개의 개념과 38개의 하위범주, 16개의 범주를 발견하였다. 사회적응과정 상의 중심현상은 “격렬한 출렁임”로 나타났으며, 인과적인 조건은 ‘자각’, ‘퇴원 계획’, ‘비행습관’이었고, 맥락적 조건은 ‘좁은 인간관계’, ‘주위 환경의 열악함’, 중재적 조건은 ‘이색 경험’, ‘자아성찰’, ‘시간의 경과’이었고, 작용/상호작용으로는 ‘도움의 수용’, ‘ 처절한 몸부림’, ‘관계 변화를 모색함’이었다. 결과는 ‘긍정적인 인생관’이 정립되고, ‘만족스런 관계 형성’, ‘현실적인 목표 설정’, ‘힘차게 전진’ 이었다. 과정 분석을 통해 ‘출렁이기’, ‘버티기’, ‘가다듬기’, ‘전진하기’의 과정이 드러났으며, 선택코딩에서는 ‘자각의 긴장감을 유지하며 현실과 치열하게 투쟁하며 전진하기’라는 핵심 범주를 발견하였고, ‘현실만족 안정형’, ‘자신만만 돌파형’, ‘소명추구 전진형’의 세 유형이 발견되었다. 연구결과에 의한 제언으로는 첫째, ‘기존의 또래 집단’에 대한 새롭고 다양한 이해와 활용, 둘째, 연약하고 어려운 상황에 처한 지지체계임에도 불구하고 퇴원생들에겐 오로지 ‘가족’만이 의지할 가장 중요한 지지 체계이므로, 가족의 지지 강화와 대체가능한 지역사회 자원 개발과 연계를 주도하는 전문적인 사후관리 체계 수립 셋째, 초기 비행연령의 중요성을 인식하여 비행이 습관화되기 전 초기개입 넷째, 소년원 내에서의 실현 가능한 구체적인 퇴원 계획과 직업 연계 다섯째, 재범의 유혹을 이기게 하는 가장 중요한 ‘자각’의 개념을 인식, 유지하는 퇴원 전후의 효과적인 서비스의 체계화 여섯째로는 인생의 전환점을 맞이할 수 있는 다양한 변화와 선택의 기회 제공이다.
