The Role of Nonprofit Organization in the Touristic Placemaking - The Case of Higashiyama in Kanazawa, Japan

This paper aims to investigate the role of non-profit organization as a crucial agent in the process of the touristic placemaking. Higashiyama in Kanazawa City, Japan is examined in detail as a case study. NPOs such as 'Association of Old ShopLiteratureRomance(老文ロマンの町を考える)' and 'Higashiyama Placemaking Association(金東山まちづくり協議)' 'Higashiyama Culture Conservation Association(東山ひがしの町みと文化を守る)' are not only capable of raising awareness of crucial regional issues, but also able to provide alternatives and produce public goods and services. In addition They function as a mediator of conflicts in tourism development. By analyzing this way, the paper draws implications on whether 'the touristic placemaking' is possible in Korea, especially on the role of NPOs as an agent of placemaking
