Performance Evaluation of 4-leg and 1-lane Modern Roundabout Using SIDRA

This study deals with the effectiveness of modern roundabouts(MR). The goal is to answer the question of what the traffic conditions make the MRs to be comparatively efficient. To pursue the above, this study gives particular attentions to comparing the performance of MR with the other intersection control methods using SIDRA, which are yield control, all way stop control and signal control, under the given traffic volume.The main results analysed are the followings. First, the MR has the similar delay to the signalized intersection in the case of the traffic volume under 2,600vph, and shows that the more right-turn and the less through traffic have the less delay. Secondly, the MR has the lower volume-capacity rate(v/c) than other methods in the case of below the volume of 1,800vph, and shows that the more right-turn and the less through traffic have the less v/c.The above results indicate that the MRs are relatively effective to other control methods under the some conditions. It could be expected that the results would give an important policy implication to the introduction of MRs.
