The purpose of this study was to provide basic materials for traffic safety policy by analysing the effect of traffic safety education on reducing driver's license suspension. Data of 617 drivers' behavior for 5 years, whose licenses were suspended for traffic law violations, were collected in Seongnam, Gyongi province since 2003. For the analysis, methods of Covariance Analysis and Logistic Regression Analysis were conducted. Variables of gender, age, and driving career were controlled. The results of both covariance analysis and logistic regression analysis showed that traffic safety education reduce license suspension. This study had two major limitations. First, socioeconomic variables such as education level, marriage status, and economic condition were not controlled. Second, the study area was constrained to only one city, which put restraint on generalization of the study results.
Nevertheless, this study made valuable contributions in that the long-term and objective effect of traffic safety education was proved using the multivariate analysis method and five years of follow-up data. Also, this study first attempted to make an analysis for driver's licensce suspension.

본 연구는 교통안전교육이 면허정지처분 감소에 미치는 영향을 분석함으로써 교통안전 관련 정책에 도움이 되는 기초자료를 제공하고자 했다. 이를 위해 2003년 경기도 성남시 소재에서 법규위반으로 운전면허 정지처분을 받은 운전자 617명에 대하여 2008년까지 5년간 운전행태를 추적한 자료를 대상으로 공분산 분석과 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 교통안전교육 외에 면허정지처분에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 변수들로서 성, 연령, 운전경력을 통제하였다. 분석결과, 공분산 분석과 로지스틱 회귀분석 공히 교통안전교육이 면허정지처분을 감소시키는 것으로 드러났다. 비록 학력이나 혼인상태, 경제사정 등 사회경제적 변수들이 통제되지 않은 점, 연구의 대상 소재지가 경기도 성남시에 국한되어 연구결과를 일반화기 어렵다는 점 등의 한계가 있었지만, 국내에서 흔히 사용되지 않는 분석기법과 5년간의 추적자료를 이용하여 교통안전교육의 장기적 효과성을 객관적으로 검증하고자 했다는 점과 면허정지처분에 대한 분석을 시도했다는 점 등에서 기존 국내 연구들과 차별되는 의미 있는 연구였다.
