was created with the subject matter of general Im Gyung-Up’s life story which was the historical fact having before and after the Manchu war of 1636 as the background, and it is one of the novels read greatly popularly during the latter half of Joseon.
This article aims to examine how the aspects of character embodiment in describing Im Gyung-Up’s life story developed differently from historical fact are related with the author’s intention and look into the principle of customs and culture in character embodiment by studying organic relations between character embodiment in such works and characters analyzed by the principle of naming.
For this research, first of all, this study examines how interesting elements, the expectation for fun in the work shown form characters’ personality and conflict, instructive elements that show right duties of men in life, and the purposeful elements of the work, the expectation for the demand of the time are related with the intention of the author who creates it, and it looks into how Im Gyung-Up’s character shown in the work from the method of such character embodiment is organically related with the character found from the Gwae composition with the method of naming theory. And this study has found that the interesting, instructional, and purposeful elements shown from characters’ personality and conflict in the work are organically related with the character’s personality, morality, and life in general shown from JoonReJin(重雷震) Gwae gained by calculating the number of strokes in the name of Im Gyung-Up(林慶業) with the method of naming theory.
Thus, regarding the intention of work creation, it can be inferred that the author may have created the work with a real man based on the character’s life and personality interpreted by Gwae of naming theory by using the principle of naming, the conventional and cultural method of the time.
It can be seen that in differing from actual fact, the author’s idea to accept the culture and customs of naming theory of that time works as principle of composing characters’ personality and conflict and also conducting character embodiment. And it is significant in that this paper examines the conventional and cultural principle of classic novels that novelize actual facts.36)

<임경업전>은 병자호란을 전후 배경으로 해서 실존 인물이었던 임경업 장군의 일대기를 소재로 창작되어, 조선 후기에 상당한 인기를 누리면서 읽혀졌던 소설 중의 하나이다.
이 글은 실사와는 다르게 작품이 전개되는 임경업 장군의 일대기를 그린 <임경업전>에서 인물의 형상화의 양상이 작품을 창작한 작가의 의도와 연관됨을 밝히고, 그러한 작품에서의 인물 형상화와 작명의 이치로 분석한 인물과의 유기적 관계를 살펴 인물 형상화의 관습문화적 원리를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다.
이 연구를 위해 인물의 성격과 갈등을 통해 나타나는 작품에서 재미의 기대감인 흥미적 요소, 인간이 살아야 하는 바른 도리를 밝히는 교훈적 요소, 당시의 시대가 요구하는 기대감인 작품의 목적 요소가 작품을 창작한 작가의 의도와 관계가 있음을 먼저 밝혔고, 그러한 인물 형상화의 방법을 통해 작품에서 나타나는 임경업의 인물됨과 역상성명학적 방법으로 괘를 구성하여 알 수 있는 인물됨과 유기적 관련성이 있음을 살펴보았다.
작품에서 인물 성격과 갈등을 통한 흥미 요소, 교훈 요소, 목적 요소가 林慶業이란 성명의 획수를 계산해서 구한 重雷震괘에서 나타나는 인물의 품성과 도리, 일생 전반과 유기적인 관련이 있음을 확인하였다.
따라서 작가는 작품의 창작 의도를 당대의 관습문화적 방법인 작명의 이치를 원용하여 실제 인물을 성명의 괘로 풀이될 수 있는 인물의 일생과 성품을 바탕으로 작품을 구성하여 창작하였을 것이라 추정할 수 있으며, 이런 추정은 작가가 성명학적 지식을 갖춘 지식인이었다고 생각할 수 있다.
이처럼 실사와는 구별되는 <임경업전>이 당대의 역상성명학이라는 문화관습을 수용한 작가의 사상이 인물의 성격과 갈등을 구성하여 인물형상화의 원리로 작용하였다고 볼 수 있으며, 실사를 소설화한 고전소설의 관습 문화적 원리를 밝혀보았다는 것에 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
