The purpose of this study is to measure and comparatively analyze the Korean and world records in shooting, swimming, and track and field that make up part of the modern pentathlon, so as to improve athletes’ability to control their records better by providing them with the basic data and information they need. A comparative review of the records of Korean and foreign pentathlon athletes hold in the field of shooting showed that Korean athletes lagged behind the top-class athletes holding world records by 3.8%. In order to improve Korean athletes’ record, it is important to develop and provide a training program based on the basic data of overall world records. The top-class Korean athletes also lagged behind world-record holders by 3.2% in the area of swimming. Korean swimmers will therefore approximate the world record level only when they score at least 180 points out of 200. In shooting, they must also score at least 9 points out of 10. Athletes will be internationally competitive in the area of swimming only when they can finish 200m in two minutes and a few seconds based on thorough endurance and power training. In track and field, Korean athletes can approach the world record level only when they finish 3,000m in 9 minutes and 20 seconds. This means that they have to run every 100m in 18 seconds on average. In order for Korean athletes to demonstrate their potentials and capacities to the fullest notwithstanding the inferiority of their physical structures when compared to top-class athletes from around the world, they must grow strong endurance and stamina. Most importantly, a systematic training plan must be established so as to improve their records in track and field.
