Natural environment and human history exchanged effect each other. They have shared the way of history as cause and result of the change. Studying on the history of environment is to understand the interdependence of it and to grasp the core of environmental problems in order to make the view of righteous environment for the history of environment in history class.
To teach the history of environment for understanding the core of environmental problems and to enlarge the ability of solving problems are, at the same time, to expect to form the view of righteous environment. To achieve these goals, there are some explanations the effect and the result of environment : effect on human culture, human view of nature. It is important to pay attention to the long-term change process as specific examples in class. It is not only a time subject to pursue harmony and coexistence of human but also take the view of sustainable development which is not a dichotomical view, conservation or development of environment, in history class.

자연환경과 인류역사는 서로 영향을 주고받으면서 변화의 원인이자 결과로써 역사적 길을 함께 해왔다. 이러한 상호의존성을 올바로 이해하려는 것이 환경사 연구다. 이 시대의 화두가 되고 있는 환경문제의 본질과 문제점을 파악하고 바람직한 환경관을 형성하기 위해 역사수업에서도 환경사교육이 필요한 시점이 되었다. 역사교육에서 환경사를 수업함으로써 환경문제의 본질을 이해하고 학생들의 지적인 문제해결 능력을 신장시키고 동시에 바람직한 환경관을 형성할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 이러한 목표를 달성하기 위해서는 환경이 인류 문명 발달에 끼친 영향, 인간의 자연관, 인간사회가 자연환경에 끼친 영향과 그 결과에 대한 이해가 요구된다. 특히 구체적인 사례를 중심으로 장기적 변화 과정에 주목하면서 수업을 준비하는 것이 중요하다. 환경보전이냐 환경개발이냐의 이분법적 시각이 아닌 ‘지속가능한 개발’의 관점에서 환경과 인류의 공존과 조화를 추구하는 역사수업은 시대적 과제인 것이다.
