Korea has become a Multi-cultural society. The purpose of this study is to understand the Japanese immigrant wives' life history. Japanese immigrant wives are different from other immigrants of undeveloped or developing countries. Japan is economically a developed country and Japanese immigrant wives in Korea are producing through the c This study explores the Japanese immigrant wives' life history and the current issues and their efforts to adapt to Korean society. I have collected and analyzed the life history of Japanese immigrant wives producing through the Unification Church's mass wedding and with the introduction of a friend. Analyzing the life histories is very meaningful way to reveal their experiences by women themselves. I have found the following facts. First, There is the indiviidual decision to the international marriage despite of objections. Second, It is important to their initial adaptation that Korean husband's care and his family's affection. They should play crucial roles as assistants until immigrant women settle and adapt to Korean society. Third, Social support system hold a very important position in their decision making. Fourth, History issues between Korea and Japan have had little impact on their life and existence. Finally, the issues of child-rearing and dual-income family is similar to that of Korean couples.

일본인 여성결혼 이민자는 결혼동기가 타 출신국가와 달리 통일교를 통한 결혼이 많으며, 경제적인 면에서 타 출신국이 개발도상국인데 반해 일본은 선진국이고, 또 한일 교류의 역사적 복잡성을 볼 때, 독립적으로 연구될 필요성 이 있다. 이에 따른 구체적인 연구문제는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 일본인 결혼이주여성의 생애과정이 어떠하였는지를 알아 보고자 한다. 이들의 성장과정, 결혼과정, 결혼생활 및 이주적응과정을 통해 이들의 삶을 이해하고자 한다. 둘째, 일본인 결 혼이주여성의 생애 과정에서 나타나는 적응에 도움이 되는 요인들을 찾아보고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 일본인 여성결혼 이민 자의 한국생 활 적응의 과정을 파악하기 위하여 통계청 자료와 선행 연구들을 통해 일본인 여성결혼 이민자의 거주실태를 알아보고 국제결혼 과정, 가족생활과 사회생활 적응의 특성을 살펴보았다. 그리고, 한국에서 이들의 적응과정의 경험을 보다 구체적 으로 이해하고 그 의미를 파악하기 위해 생애사 분석을 통한 질적 분석을 시도하였다. 그 결과, 첫째, 일본인 결혼이주여성의 국제결혼 과정에서 본인의 국제결혼 선택에 대한 의지가 높았다. 둘째, 결혼이주여 성들의 결혼생활 만족에서 초기적응에서 남편의 적극적 도움이 가장 중요한 것으로 드러났다. 셋째, 결혼이주 여성들의 사회생활 적응에서 사회적지지 시스템의 의존도가 크다는 것이다. 넷째, 양국의 역사적 배경으로 인한 혼란들 이 예상되었 으나 이들의 삶에서는 단편적 삶의 일부였다. 다섯째, 이들의 자녀양육의 문제, 맞벌이 부부로서의 문제 등은 한국 일반가정 에서 결혼생활의 주요한 이슈와 동일하다는 점이다. 이러한 결과를 통해 결혼 이주여성이 끊임없이 환경과 상 호작용하는 존재이며 새로운 사람, 사회, 문화의 만남을 통해 자기를 확장하고 다시 자기의 정체성을 찾아가는 주체적인 존재임을 알 수 있었다.
