The idiomatic structure 'mal(eul/do)mala', which has already become a fixed one, is transformed from 'mal+malda' which means to restrain the action while words are being uttered. It is usually functioned pragmatically in spoken language. To be specific, ‘mal(eul/do)mala' refers to degree in most cases. If it is placed just near the beginning of a sentence, it has the most abstract meaning and the pragmatic function of drawing attention. If it is placed in the middle of a sentence, emphasis is made. If it is placed at the end of a sentence, omission is made.(Nanjing Normal University)
