This article aim to discuss regional identity based on representation and emergent reflexivity focusing on Yufuin. A theoretical frame in this study being based on Mead’s concepts: “I and Me” and “Emergent Reflexivity”, I discuss the regional identity constructed by inseparable and close relationship between the representation of outside and inside in the same time, which is assumed that the process of “Emergent Reflexivity” occurs in the relation between outside and inside of region. From the review of Ota’s discussion on the Manta Ray Issue and case study of Yufuin, plural objects of representation and complexity of representation has been revealed. The case of Yufuin, however, a new image which differs from the image of Mass-tourism destination is shared by some reasons among dwellers. The case of Yufuin compared with Manta Ray Issue, there exist some differences between the object and a purpose of representation. We also need to notice that the change of social environment has been positively affected to Yuhuin Machizukuri groups’ representation. And a new view of representation as Yufuin brand has been recently come up after the new image of Yufuin spread over.

今まで観光地を表象してきたのは、主に旅行会社とメディアを含む地域外部で、地域内部による自らの表象はあまり積極的に行われてこなかった。しかし、発地型観光から着地型観光への観光形態の転換が議論されるなか、観光の場における表象は、どのように変化していくだろうか。本論稿ではある地域が外部から表象されること、自ら表象することをミードの自我論を援用しながら考察し地域アイデンティティという概念の定義を試みる。1990年におきた「マンタ論争」を整理し、自己表象の複合性を確認した上で、由布院のまちづくりの過程を取り上げ、観光の場での外部表象と自己表象(地域内部からの表象)に焦点を当てながら、その表象の主体、語り、背景について概観する。事例分析を通して、表象主体の多元性と表象の複合性を確認するとともに、表象の分析を通じて地域アイデンティティの定義および構築について考察する。
