The purpose of this study was to provide better understanding of adult learners' participatory and learning motivation and implication for practitioners in the adult education field by analyzing the recent literature. In the present study, 102 studies were reviewed which were published in major journals indexed in Korea Research Foundation from January, 2000 to September, 2011. The following six major themes of research were found: (1) understanding of motivation of special adult learner group (2) finding influence of adult learners’ motivation on education and learning results (3) exploring relationship between adult learners' motivation and teaching and learning strategies (4) investigating influence of employees' motivation on job-related variables (5) discovering relationship between adult learners' motivation and their psychological and behavior variables and educational context variables (6) various findings from literature review. The discussion and critique of these six themes and suggestions for future research and practice were provided.

본 연구는 성인학습자의 교육참여 및 학습동기에 관한 국내 연구의 최근 동향 분석을 통해서 성인학습자의 동기에 대한 종합적 이해와 향후 연구의 방향을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 2000년부터 2011년까지 학술진흥재단의 등재지에 발표된 성인을 대상으로 한 교육참여 및 학습동기에 관한 총 102편의 연구를 수집하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째 성인학습자를 대상으로 진행된 교육참여 및 학습동기에 관한 연구는 일반교육학, HRD 및 평생교육학, 어학, 간호학, 심리학, 언론/홍보학, 경영학 등 다양한 곳에서 이루어졌다. 둘째, 성인학습자의 교육참여 및 학습동기에 관한 연구의 주요 주제는 특정 집단의 동기이해, 교육/학습 성과 변인과의 관계, 교수 및 학습 전략 변인과의 관계, 직무관련 변인과의 관계, 학습자의 심리/행동 변인 및 교육상황과의 관계, 문헌 연구이다. 셋째, 연구 결과가 갖는 함의점, 후속 연구의 지향점, 실천 분야의 제안점등에 대해 논의하였다.
