This paper focuses on depictive secondary predication in English and aims to provide the restriction on depictive constructions. Depictive predicates can be divided into two kinds: subject-oriented and direct object-oriented depictives. There have been a handful of attempts to generalize the possible distribution of depictive secondary predicates. First, depictive secondary predication is regulated by a strict structural relation. The configurational c-command constraint comes into play. Second, the predication is defined in terms of thematic roles. Thematic constraints are imposed on what the subject of a depictive predicate can be. It is shown that depictive relation cannot be reduced to either a syntactic relation or a thematic relation. This paper suggests that the constraints on depictives should be captured in terms of linking event arguments of the matrix verb and the depictive predicate
