The aim of this paper is to arrange groundworks for implementing successfully the Humanties Korea(HK) Project with reviewing the diagnosis "crisis of the humanities" and the prescription "promotion of the humanities" in korea. The HK project is one of the treatments in accordance with the prescription. Does the humanities of korea face a crisis indeed? For answering to this question, the question "What is the humanities?" is asked firstly. Because the humanities is not a individual science, it is not easy to determine what the humanities is. Even if it is determined with difficulty, there are various opinions about a crisis of the humanities in korea. From the point of view, that the humanities is a science by the human being, on the human being, and for the human being, a crisis of the humanities is a desperate situation, for it ends in a crisis of human being. Even though this crisis of the humanities has to be overcome, it is probably difficult to get a satisfactory effect of promotion of the humanities and the HK project for coping with crisis of the humanities in korea, because the humanities is not an exact science but a stric science, and has a fate not able to snape wings(i.e. freedom) off human being. And yet doing something is better than doing nothing for meeting with crisis of the humanities and crisis of the human being. For overcoming crisis of the humanities, it is requested to review problems of the humanities, to consider a countermeasure against them, and enlarge social role of the humanities. For considering a countermeasure against problems of the humanities, it is necessary to enforce positivity and to secure powers of persuasion of the theories with the interdisciplinary and consilient research, and to produce utility and to prove positivity of the theories with practical instances of actual application, For enlarging social role of the humanities, it is necessary to take part in society actively with various route to spread products of research in the humanities. HK project is to revitalize field of research in the humanities and to attempt promotion of the humanities in korea. Problems of research field in the humanities of korea will get solved through improving circumstance of research and expanding researcher and with accumulating and applying products of research. But if the humanities does not try to ensure transcendentality and originality in attitude and method of research in the interdisciplinary and consilient research with other research areas, HK project improves only external circumstance of the humanities in korea. In other word, if the humanities does not put itself on a sound footing, its power of persuasion becomes weak, its social role is reduced, its social utility is doubted, finally external circumstance of the humanities is going steadily downhill.

우리나라 인문학의 위기라는 진단과 인문학의 진흥이라는 처방을 검토하여 이 처방에 따른 치료들 가운데 하나인 인문한국(HK)사업을 성공적으로 수행하기 위한 토대를 마련하려는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 우리나라의 인문학은 과연 위기에 처해 있는가? 이 물음에 답하기 위해서는 “인문학이란 도대체 무엇인가?”라는 물음을 먼저 물어야 한다. 그런데 인문학이 독자적인 연구 대상과 방법을 가진 개별학문은 아니기 때문에 인문학을 규정하는 일은 쉽지 않다. 인문학을 어렵사리 규정하더라도 인문학의 위기에 관한 의견도 다양하다. 인문학이 인간에 의한, 인간에 대한, 인간을 위한 학문이라는 점에서 보자면, 인문학의 위기는 인간의 위기로 이어지는 심각한 사태이다. 이와 같은 인문학의 위기는 반드시 극복되어야 하지만, 인문학이 정밀학이 아니라 엄밀학일 수밖에 없는, 그리고 자유라는 인간의 날개를 꺾을 수는 없는 운명을 지니고 있는 한, 인문학 진흥이라는 처방과 HK사업이라는 치료가 만족할 만한 효과를 내기는 어려울 것으로 보인다. 하지만 아무것도 하지 않는 것보다는 무엇이든 하는 것이 인문학의 위기, 나아가서는 인간의 위기에 대처하는 바람직한 태도일 것이다. 우리나라 인문학의 위기를 극복하기 위해서는 인문학 자체의 문제점들을 검토하고 보완하며, 인문학의 사회적 역할을 증대하는 것이 요청된다. 인문학 자체의 문제점을 보완하기 위해서는 학제간 연구와 통섭적 연구를 통해 이론의 실증성을 높여서 설득력을 확보하며, 현실적 적용의 실제적 사례를 통해 이론의 효용을 제시하여 실용성을 제시하는 것이 필요하다. 인문학의 사회적 역할을 증대하기 위해서는 인문학이 연구성과를 전파할 수 있는 다양한 경로를 활용하여 적극적으로 사회에 참여하는 것이 필요하다. HK사업은 인문학의 연구부문을 활성화하여 우리나라 인문학의 진흥을 도모하려는 기획이다. 우리나라 인문학의 연구부문이 안고 있는 문제는 연구환경과 연구인력의 확충, 연구성과의 축적과 활용을 통해 해결할 수 있을 것이다. 하지만 인문학과 인접 학문영역들의 학제간 연구와 통섭적 연구에서 인문학이 연구의 태도와 방법에서 선험성과 근원성을 확보하려는 노력을 적극적으로 시도하지 않으면, HK사업은 우리나라 인문학의 외부적 환경을 일시적으로 개선하는 것에 그치고 말 가능성이 높다. 다시 말해, 인문학 자체가 바로 서지 않으면 인문학의 설득력이 강화되지 않을 것이며, 인문학의 사회적 역할이 증대되기 어려울 것이며, 그래서 인문학의 사회적 효용이 문제가 될 것이며, 결국 인문학의 외부적 환경이 다시 악화될 것이다.
