A study on the Mechanical Properties of Concrete According to Substitution Rate of Recycled Concrete Aggregates and Use of Steel Fibers

This study aims to consider the use of steel fiber materials as a way to supplement weaknesses of using recycled concrete aggregates (RCA). To achieve this research objective, experiments were conducted using mixtures of steel fibers in concrete fabricated with four different ratios of RCA. The results were evaluated to investigate the effects on the compressive, tensile, and flexural strength of concrete members fabricated with the addition of steel fibers to various ratios of RCA. The conclusions address the potential for effectively using steel fiber-mixed RCA. In this study, characteristics of concrete strength were observed utilizing several replacement ratios of recycled aggregate (0%, 15%, 30% and 50%). Further, changes of the early strength and long-term strength were analyzed in experiments evaluating compressive, tensile and flexural characteristics utilizing varying degrees of aging (compression·tension: 3 days, 7 days and 28 days; bending: 28 days). Variables of the mixing rate of steel fibers (0%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1%) were evaluated to determine its effectiveness in remedying conventional weaknesses of using RCA.
The experimental results indicate that the compressive, tensile and flexural strength are almost similar to concrete employing normal aggregate, where steel fiber is utilized with a recycled aggregate ratio of up to 30%. Moreover, where a 1% mixing rate of steel fiber is utilized with a replacement ratio of recycled aggregate of 50%, the dynamic characteristics are also similar to normal concrete. Judging from these results, it is proposed that concrete composed of steel fiber reinforcement using proper ratios of recycled aggregates has a viable application in concrete structures.
