To study an actual promotion plan on public design which plays a central role of improving quality of life for residents in the public area and forming images of a nation and each local government can be said to be the most basic foundation in establishing a public design strategy.
Recently, interests in the public design has been increased enough to be called as the national issue and each local government is carrying out public design projects actively.
But as local governments have paid attentions to visible project performances from the
starting point of introducing public design projects, they have repeated trials and errors which had occurred in the precedent design projects or are exposed to several problems.
Accordingly, this study aimed at examining theories relatedpublic design for the right introduction and invigoration of public design and suggesting more basic improving plan by comparing and analyzing domestic and foreign advanced cases which have been carried out all the while.
In addition, the basic plan and implantation roadmap of public design were suggested with a case of Pyeongtaek City which has participated in the public designpromotion work of the applicable local government. Also the public design development plan and implementation plan for local governments which fit for domestic conditions based on it were suggested and the alternative of actual design development roadmap was intended to be suggested by devising solutions of long-tem and sustainable dimension, Furthermore, as a plan for improving above problems, public design policies should be established and carries out based on analyzing detailed plans of overall public design policies for local governments as well as integrated thinking which may concentrate all capabilities of administrative areas.

공적인 영역에서 주민 삶의 질을 향상 시키고 국가 및 각 지자체의 이미지를 형성하는데 중요한 역할을 하는 공공디자인의 실제적 추진 방안을 연구하는 것은 공공디자인 전략을 수립하는데 있어서 가장 기본적인 밑바탕이 된다고 할 수 있다.
최근 국가적 이슈라고 할 수 있을 만큼 공공디자인에 대한 관심이 날로 확대되어 왔으며 각 지방자치단체 마다 공공디자인 사업을 적극적으로 추진하고 있다. 그러나 지자체들은 공공디자인을 도입하는 초기 시점에서부터 가시적인 사업 성과에만 관심을 기울인 나머지 그 동안 추진되었던 선행 디자인사업에서 발생한 시행착오를 반복하거나 여러 가지 문제점을 노출하고 있는 상태이다.
따라서 본 연구에서는 공공디자인의 올바른 도입과 활성화를 위해 공공디자인 관련 이론을 고찰 하고, 그 동안 진행된 국내.외 선진사례를 비교 분석하여 보다 근본적인 개선 방안을 모색하고자 하였다.
아울러 연구자가 해당 지자체의 공공디자인 추진업무에 참여한바 있는 평택시를 사례로 공공디자인 기본계획 및 실천 로드맵을 제시하였다. 또한 그를 바탕으로 국내 여건에 적합한 지자체 공공디자인개발계획 및 실행 방안을 제안 하고 장기적이고 지속가능한 차원의 해법을 강구함으로써 실제적인 디자인 개발 로드맵의 대안을 제안 하고자 하였다.
나아가 이상과 같은 문제점을 개선하기 위한 방안으로서 지자체의 전체적인 공공디자인 정책에 대한 세부 전략을 심도 있게 분석함과 아울러 행정분야의 모든 역량을 결집하는 융합적 사고를 바탕으로 공공디자인 정책을 수립하고 추진하여야 할 것이다.
