The religion has made great efforts to promote the psychological development of human beings until the depth psychology came into being in modern society. The image of God that each religion teaches gave help to integrate the opposites which made conflicts in human beings, as it presented usually complete and totality. Moreover the great religions in the world have evolved humanity by way of pulling human beings toward spirituality, not repressing the instinctive desires. However, religion in modern society is threatened with the development of human consciousness, and accordingly the mental health of human being is questioned. Because human being despises the unconscious area in life with the development of consciousness and the divine which can only be experienced in that area is also ignored. C.G.Jung who was a psychotherapist and the founder of the school of analytical psychology insisted on the importance of the realm of unconscious in human life as there is a centre of personality and self-regulating factor of the psyche in that realm, which is the Self. He thought that human being cannot approach to the divine exhaustively and only can experience it. So what human being says God is not God but the image of God, as human being can't grasp the totality of God. And he said that mental health depended on the relation between human being and God. Because, if human being has good relations with God, he/she can get along well. C.G.Jung concerned much about the problems of mental health and religion, especially the relation between them, He thought that many human beings in modern society suffered much from the loss of ground of being with the weaakening of the religions. So he tried to make clear the relation between the dogma of religion and mental health : he was eager to clarify the therapeutic effects of dogma while human being believes truly as he thought that the relation between ego and Self depends on that of human being and God. He tried to elucidate the psychological meaning of religion in the era of the decline of religion.

현대 사회에 들어와서 기독교는 위기 국면을 맞고 있다. 한국 사회에서는 물론 전세계적으로 기독교는 영향력을 잃고 있으며, 그에 따라서 현대인들은 그 전까지 그들의 삶에서 중심을 잡아 주던 종교적 기반을 잃어버리고 정신 건강에 심각한 위험을 안고 산다. 그러나 종교는 심층심리학이 현대 사회에서 출현하기 전까지 인간의 정신적 발달과 안정을 기하는데 커다란 공헌을 하였다. 왜냐하면 종교의 도그마는 종교적 천재들이 인간의 마음 깊은 곳에 있는 신적 실재를 체험하고, 그것을 설명하기 위하여 상징적인 언어로 표현해 놓은 것이기 때문이다. 따라서 사람들은 여태까지 종교를 통하여 그들의 내면에 있는 본능적 충동과 정신성을 향한 충동을 그 어느 한쪽도 억압하지 않고, 통합할 수 있었다. 그래서 C.G.융은 세계의 위대한 종교들은 정신치료를 위한 좋은 상징체계라고 주장하였다. 그러나, 현대 사회에 들어와서 종교는 인간의 의식이 발달함에 따라서 그런 역할을 제대로 하지 못하고 위협 받고 있으며, 현대인들은 그들의 고뇌를 해결해 줄 수 있는 상징체계를 어디에서도 찾지 못하고 있다. C.G.융은 현대인의 이와 같은 고뇌를 예리하게 느끼고, 그 해결책을 찾으려고 하였다. 그러면서 현대인은 그 원인을 현대 종교, 특히 기독교에서 현대인들이 무의식에서 요청하는 하나님을 제대로 전해 주지 못하고 있음에서 찾았다. 그에 의하면 하나님 자체(Godhead)와 사람들이 하나님이라고 생각하는 이미지(image of God)는 서로 다르며, 사람들은 하나님-이미지를 통해서 하나님 자체에 다가갈 수 있는데, 현대 교회가 제시하는 하나님-이미지가 하나님 자체를 제대로 반영하지 못해서, 현대인들은 그들의 삶의 중심과 지향이 되는 상징을 가지지 못해서 정신적으로 문제에 봉착하였다. 따라서 정신 건강의 측면에서도 심각한 위기에 처해 있다. 그래서 융은 이와 같은 상황을 타개하려고 여러 가지 건설적인 대안들을 제시하려고 하였다.
