This article is an effort from an assumed viewpoint of the preacher in practice to establish a connective relationship between the traditional preaching theory and the modern preaching theories, which apparently have had a mutual exclusive relationship, through a critical understanding of the presuppositions and natures of modern critiques and the opposite traditional claim. (In this, the "modern preaching theories" means all sorts of anti-traditional homiletic positions, which have occurred without a necessary lineal connection since Henry Emerson Fosdick.) It does not mean that I can make a subsuming theory to reorganize the traditional theory and the modern ones into a coherent system. It is true that there are some undeniable mutual exclusive aspects between them beyond an easy reconciliation. The modern homiletic views rely on a language-philosophical assumption, born of the environment called "the linguistic turn," which is theoretically difficult to coexist with the traditional position. Nevertheless, this article's departure is a belief that we need to some extent to find a linkage point between the traditional theory and the modern theories because of practical reasons. The phenomenon of contemporary flooded homiletic theories, as such, may appear a confuse rather than an abundance to preachers in practice. Worse still, when the new theories just contradict with the traditional view, which has been established as the preachers' secure foundation for centuries, the choice between the theories will work as a psychological pressure rather than an intellectual stimulus. For the author, its more serious resultant aspect is that the said confuse or dilemma may leave preachers without the sense of direction, depriving them of the conviction about the preaching ministry itself. In view of such practical situations, this study attempts to understand the homiletic propositional function as a linkage point to connect the traditional to the modern. It is because the focus of the critiques of most modern theories against the traditional theory is brought into the propositional characteristic of the latter. The central argument of this study is that the basic function of preaching is propositional; you may abandon the propositional form, but not the propositional nature. For this, the author critically understands the historical character and langage-philosophical assumptions of the modern homiletic theories, on the one hand, and argues for the validity of the traditional position, on the other, with a view to showing a contact point between them, and then suggests practical implications of the new understanding.

본고는 하나의 가정된 현장 설교자의 관점에서 전통적 설교이론과 현대적 설교이론들 사이의 대립적 관계를, 현대적 비판과 전통적 주장 각각의 전제와 성격을 비판적으로 이해하는 것을 통해, 상보적으로 재정립해 보려는 노력의 산물이다(여기서 말하는 현대설교이론들이란 Henry Emerson Fosdick 이후 최근까지 계통적이라기보다 동시다발적으로 일어나 공존하는 모든 반전통적 설교이론들을 지칭한다). 그렇다고 전통적 설교이론과 현대적 설교이론들을 정합(종합?)적으로 통합하는 포괄적 이론이 가능하다는 것은 아니다. 전통적 설교와 현대적 이론들 사이에는 분명히 근본적 화해가 어려운 대립적 측면이 있다. 현대설교이론들은 20세기의 “언어적 전환”(the linguistic turn)이라는 사상적 환경에서 태어났으며 전통적 입장과 상존이 어려운 언어철학적 전제에 바탕을 두고 있기 때문이다. 그럼에도 전통적 설교이론과 현대적 설교이론들 사이에 어느 정도 연결고리를 확보하는 것이 실천적으로 필요하다는 것이 본 논문의 문제의식이다. 현장 설교자들에게는 수많은 설교이론들의 난립이 풍성함보다 오히려 혼란으로 다가올 수 있으며, 무엇보다 그 새로운 이론들이 수세기 동안 설교자들의 기반을 이뤄온 전통적 관점과 모순관계를 이룰 때 지적 활력보다 심적 갈등으로 압박을 줄 수 있기 때문이다. 필자의 관점에서 이것이 진짜 문제인 것은 이 혼란과 갈등이 설교자들로 하여금 자신의 고유직무에 관한 방향감각과 확신을 잃게 할 수 있다는 점이다. 본고는 이 같은 문제의식을 바탕으로 전통과 현대를 이어주는 연결점으로서 설교의 명제적 기능을 재이해하려고 한다. 전통적 입장에 대한 대부분의 현대이론들의 반발이 전통적 설교의 명제성에 집중되기 때문이다. 이에 대한 본고의 입론은 설교의 기능은 기본적으로 명제적이며 설교의 명제적 형식은 버릴 수 있을지라도 그 명제적 성격 자체를 폐기할 수 없다는 것이다. 이를 위해 본고는 현대설교이론들의 역사적 성격과 그 언어철학적 기반을 비판적으로 이해한 후 전통적 입장의 비판적 타당성의 제시를 통해 양자 사이의 접촉점을 보여주고 이에 따른 실제적인 함의들을 제시한다.
