Church year was associated with ‘time’ and ‘memory’ of times according to the meaning of the word itself. Namely, church year allowed humans to remember what God did, what God is doing for humans and God promised what He would do in a general flow of life through church year, called humans’ attention to Christian historical events and let humans put the events into their present experience. Therefore, church plays a role of looking back on the event of redemption and experiencing it newly again by repeating the event of God’s redemption for humans happened within a specific time according to a fixed cycle. However, church year in Korean Christian churches has been decorated by all sorts of programs according to Christians’ needs (ministry) for their churches (finance), not remembering the redemption ministry of Jesus in the past and applying it to today’s field. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to point out such a problem and to recover the position of early church year to give Christians a help in having a natural confidence that their life was managed under God’s grace by recovering the true meaning of church year in history.

교회력(敎會曆)은 그 자체가 가진 단어의 의미에 따라 ‘시간’과 그 시간에 대한 ‘기억’으로 연관지에 생각되었다. 즉, 인간은 교회력을 통해 자신이 살아가는 일반적인 삶의 흐름 속에서 ‘하나님께서 무엇을 하셨는지, 우리를 위해 무엇을 하고 계시는지, 그리고 무엇을 하시기로 약속하셨는지’를 기억하며, 그리스도의 역사적인 사건을 환기시키고 그것을 현재의 경험으로 이끌어 오도록 하였다. 그러므로 교회력은 특정한 시간 안에서 발생한 인간을 향한 하나님의 구원 사건을 일정한 주기에 따라 반복함으로써 그 구원의 사건을 회상할 뿐 아니라 다시금 새롭게 경험할 수 있도록 도와주는 역할을 하는 것이다. 그러나 한국교회에서의 교회력의 위치는 과거 예수의 구원 사역을 기억하여 오늘의 현장화 하도록 하는 것이 아닌 교회를 위한(재정), 목회자의 필요(사역)에 따라, 온갖 프로그램으로 치장되기에 이르렀다. 따라서 본 논고는 이러한 문제점들을 지적하고 역사적 교회력의 참 의미를 되찾아 그리스도인들로 하여금 자신들의 삶이 하나님의 은혜 안에서 영위되고 있음을 자연스럽게 확신할 수 있도록 돕고자 했던 초기 교회력의 위치를 되찾아 보고자 함에 그 의의를 둔다.
