The dress and its ornament is called the cultural product of an era and the first and the best way to study is the exhaustive historical research based on the literature and secondly, comparison of the actual through the analysis and verification. The best effective study of the dress and ornament is to consider them thorough the comparative analysis of visuals that are based on the literature data, however, remaining of literature data does not mean the actual is remaining too and there would be no text about the origin and form of production or the Ham (a box of wedding gifts went by a bridegroom to his bride before wedding) of the dress and ornament has been revealed even if the actual was remaining. Sungho(Lee-ick, 李瀷)(1681~1763) has contained the references about the dress and ornament in 『Seonghosaseol』(editorial of Seougho) ｢Manmulmun｣ and this is currently the useful material in the study of dress and ornament. However, to take the advantage of these materials, verification of his record is a matter of common knowledge even though Seoungho’s records are through an exhaustive historical research. In this study, the contents of the pictures and actual visuals of the dress and ornament data that Sungho Lee-ick(李瀷)(1681~1763) has contained in 『Seonghosaseol』(editorial of Seougho) ｢Manmulmun｣ with comparative analysis and study of the dress and ornament that have interested Sungho and what was the content to reveal them were discussed. Therefore, comparative analysis was done by 18 types of the dress and ornament with visuals among 37 types of data that Sungho Lee-ick has contained in ｢Manmulmun｣, and the results are as follows. First, the origins of Dopo(man’s jacket as a dress), Gwaebae(clothes that were strapped by beads and rings in both sides), Pigyeon, myeokri, nansam(the clothes for scholars in Joseon Dynasty), Jamdo(to fix the hat for government officials using hairpin or wood material) and Gyejang etc were considered through an exhaustive historical research and secondly, the opportunity has been arraged to rediscover the value by correcting the misconceptions about the dress and ornament like Gu(裘, The animal fur lined clothing) Chogu, Namaksin(straw shoes), Okyoung(wooden shoes) etc. Thirdly, Balgae and Ja, Woman Dress etc have created the standard rules and regulations to correct the negative effect and edify the custom as well as the recorded references are highly valued in understanding the dress and ornament in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. Nevertheless, due to Sungho was not a dress and ornament scholar, there were some part that he misunderstood the origin and how to wear the Goseupyoseup, Paedae (belt), Bokgun, (the hat for the confucian scholar), Yeomo (women’s headgear) etc.

한 시대의 문화적 산물이라고 하는 복식을 연구하는 데 있어 가장 좋은 방법은 첫째, 문헌을 기반으로 한 철저한 고증이며, 둘째, 실물과의 비교를 통한 분석과 검증이다. 그러나 문헌자료가 있다고 하더라도 실제 실물이 남아 있지 않은 경우도 있고, 실물은 남아 있다할지라도 그것의 유래나 제작방식 또는 그 복식이 갖는 함의 등을 밝힌 텍스트가 없는 경우도 있다. 이러한 상황에서 성호 李瀷(1681~1763)은 『성호사설』 ｢만물문｣에 많은 복식기록을 남겨 놓았으며, 이는 조선 중기의 복식연구에 있어 중요한 문헌자료로 활용되고 있다. 그러나 성호의 기록이 철저한 고증을 통해 기록되었다 할지라도 이들 자료를 십분 활용하기 위해서는 검증이 필요한 것도 주지의 사실이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 성호 李瀷(1681~1763)이『성호사설』 ｢만물문｣에 수록해 놓은 복식관련 자료를 그림이나 실물 등의 시각자료와 함께 비교･분석함으로써 성호가 당시 관심을 갖고 있었던 복식이 무엇이며, 그것을 통해 밝히고자 한 내용이 무엇이었는지를 고찰하고자 하였다. 성호 이익이 ｢만물문｣에 수록해 놓은 복식관련 자료는 36종이며, 그 중 18종의 복식기록을 시각자료와 함께 비교･분석하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 도포, 괘배, 피견, 멱리, 난삼, 잠도, 계장 등은 철저한 고증을 통하여 이들 자료에 대한 기원 및 유래를 고찰함으로써 복식의 근본을 파악하고자 하였다. 둘째, 裘, 초구, 목극, 옥영, 백갑 등은 고증을 통해 잘못 알고 있거나 잘못 알려졌음을 밝힘으로써 각각의 가치를 재발견하고자하였다. 셋째, 발개, 지척, 부인복 등은 고증을 통하여 복식이 변화하게 된 원인을 분석함으로써 잘못된 풍속은 교화하고 그에 걸 맞는 대안을 마련하고자 하였다. 이와같이 철저한 고증에도 불구하고 고습요습, 패대, 복건, 여모 등은 성호가 잘못 이해하고 있었던 것으로 본 연구에서 바로잡았다. 그러나 여전히 성호의 복식기록은 조선중기의 복식을 이해하는 데 중요한 준거자료로써 활용될 것이며, 그 가치 또한 높음을 다시 한 번 확인하였다.
