The purpose of this paper is to introduce basic knowledge needed to understand cultural criminology. It includes historical and theoretical orientations, methodological frameworks, and contemporary areas of inquiry. Cultural criminology is the study of crime and deviance to places criminality and its control in the context of culture. It examines the convergence of cultural studies, postmodern theory, critical theory, and interactionist sociology, and uses ethnographic methodologies and media/textual analysis as analytic tools. And it also explores the common ground between collective behavior organized around imagery, style, and symbolic meaning, and that categorized by legal and political authorities as criminal by investigating the role of media dynamics and social politics of crime and culture. The theoretical, methodological, and substantive orientations overlap and interweave, and enlarge the horizons for new understandings of culture and crime.

문화범죄학은 범죄, 비행 및 통제를 이해하기 위한 이론적 및 방법론적인 틀을 문화적 맥락에서 접근하는 범죄학이라 할 수 있다. 즉, 범죄행위, 사법기관, 그리고 범죄통제체계를 문화화 과정에서 산출된 창의적 결과물로 본다. 이러한 결과물은 통계적 수치나 실증적인 증거로서가 아닌 그것들이 보여주는 현상으로부터 추론된 의미의 해석을 통해 이해하고자 한다. 따라서, 사회를 구성하는 다양한 영역간의 상호작용 속에 끊임없이 교류되는 의미의 전달체계를 분석함으로써, 범죄가 탄생하고 규율되는 과정과 그 과정에서 도덕적 권위체계와 정치집단, 그리고 위반행위간의 지속적인 작용 및 반작용현상을 탐구한다. 본 논문은 크게 이론, 방법론 및 실제 연구영역으로 구성되었는 데, 이 세 부문은 상호 밀접하게 교차하며 범죄와 문화에 대한 새로운 시각을 산출한다. 첫째, 문화와 범죄의 상호관계는 어떤 지적 전통과 이론적 배경으로 설명될 수 있는가? 둘째, 상징과 스타일의 독특성과 미디어화된 의미의 양식을 파악하는 데에는 어떤 방법론이 유용한가? 셋째, 어떤 구체적인 영역이 문화적 범죄학의 시각을 통하여 탐구될 수 있는가?
