본 연구는 사회적기업의 운영성과에 어떠한 영향요인이 작용하고 있는지를 밝히기 위해 사회적기업의 유형별 성공사례를 선정하고 관계자와의 인터뷰에 의한 질적연구를 통해 고찰해보고자 하였다. 효과적인 분석을 위하여 선행연구와 문헌검토 등을 통해 사회적기업의 성과요인들을 기업가정신, 전략적 요인, 조직구조와 운영요인 등으로 구성하였다. 사례연구를 통하여 도출된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사회적기업의 성과에는 지역의 인적․물적 자원동원이 중요하게 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 사회적기업의 운영성과에 영향을 주는 요인으로서 사회적기업가정신도 매우 중요하게 작용하고 있었다. 셋째, 사회적기업은 종업원들과의 의사소통을 중요하게 생각하고 있고, 시민사회적 전통이 강한 사회적기업일수록 참여적 조직운영이 근간으로 작동하고 있었다. 향후 사회적기업의 지속가능한 성장을 위해서는 단순히 일자리창출, 혹은 실업률만을 낮추기 위한 접근은 매우 위험할 수 있다. 따라서 인건비지원 중심에서 탈피하여 사회적기업이 시장에서 살아남을 수 있도록 하는 다양한 제도적인 지원도 병행되어야 할 것이다.
