The recent increase of North Korean female defectors demands diverse changes in previous intervening polices or social welfare services regarding North Korean defectors; however, the present policies and their intervening levels remain in the basic status that does not consider their gender but mainly focuses on adaptation of individual defectors. At this moment, to examine North Korean female defectors from gender-cognitive perspective can be the foundation to concretely form the policies and intervening measures. Thereupon, this study intends to examine the actual status of supporting the settlement of North Korean female defectors in South Korean society and their difficulties different from the males’ and thereby consider measures to support their settlement. Based on this, the research will provide the ground to understand North Korean female defectors and grope for necessary measures to support them.

최근 탈북여성의 증가는 기존의 탈북자 관련 개입정책 및 정착지원서비스에 관한 다양한 변화모색을 요구하지만, 현행 정책 및 개입수준은 주로 탈북자 개인의 적응에 초점을 맞추는 기초적 수준에 머물러 있다. 이러한 시점에서 성인지적 관점의 탈북여성을 조명하는 것은 남한사회적응과 관련한 정책 및 개입 방안을 구체적으로 형성할 수 있는 토대가 될 것이다. 이에, 본 연구는 선행연구를 바탕으로 첫째, 남한사회정착 전 북한체제 내 여성의 지위 및 인권문제를 살펴보고 둘째, 탈북 후 여성들이 경험하게 되는 남한사회적응의 어려움을 결혼생활과 자녀양육, 우울 ․ 외상과 같은 정신건강, 지역사회 적응과 관련한 진로장벽 및 정체성 문제차원에서 규명하였다. 마지막으로 성인지적 관점에서 앞으로 전개되어야 할 탈북여성정착지원 방안을 제시하였다.
