Maximalism, which pursues excess and extremity, is appearing diversely in the modern fashion world, leading to a new and exciting combination of infinite imagination, experimental design and technical elements. This concept in contrast to the trend of modern fashion, which attaches importance to functionality and practicality, is being used as an expression method to realize the sensibility of a designer. This study analyzes works by Victor & Rolf, which draw attention with original designs, while focusing on maximal characteristics with an aim to identify the potentially infinite expression area of maximalism through their design sensibility and expression method, and proposes basic data for developing a creative design. This study considered maximalism brought to the fore by expanded excess and extreme formality as a foundaiton, and investigated the characteristics of maximalism through the works of duo designer Victor & Rolf who have creative ideas and an experimental realm of work. As a result, the characteristics of maximalism shown in the works of Victor & Rolf were found to be expansion, ornamentation, fantasy and fusion. First, expansion, a typical characteristic of maximalism in the works of Victor & Rolf, present maximalism in agreement to its lexical meaning ‘maximal, maximum’ mostly using an expanded form and exaggeration in expression method. Second, ornamentation was revealed through excess use of ribbons and ruffles by developing their unique wit and original realm of design into decorative elements, and they expressed a gigantic volume with ornamentation itself and exaggerated one detail of the garment or used it as an instrument for ornamentation. Third, fantasy gave a fresh impression by combining unconventional, free imagination with fashion, and works with a shift of casual things were symbolic and shook general fixed ideas. Fourth, a fusion element was typically expressed by mixing traditional classics and radical avant-garde factors.

과도함과 극단을 추구하는 맥시멀리즘(maximalism)은 새로움과 자극적인 것을 요구하는 현대 패션계에 무한한 상상력과 실험적인 디자인, 기술적인 요소의 결합으로 다양하게 나타나고 있다. 이는 기능성과 실용성을 중시 여기는 현대패션경향에 반대되는 개념으로 디자이너의 감각을 실현하는 표현방법으로 사용되고 있다. 이에 독창적인 디자인으로 주목을 받고 있는 빅터 앤 롤프 작품을 맥시멀리즘 특성을 중심으로 분석하여 그들의 디자인감각과 표현방법을 통하여 맥시멀리즘의 무한한 잠재적 표현영역을 확인하고 창의적인 디자인 개발을 위한 기초자료를 제시하는데 연구 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 과도함과 극단적인 형식의 확장으로 대두된 맥시멀리즘을 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 창의적인 발상과 실험적인 작품세계를 지니고 있는 듀오 디자이너 빅터 앤 롤프의 작품을 통하여 맥시멀리즘 특성을 알아보았다. 연구결과, 빅터 앤 롤프 작품에 나타난 맥시멀리즘 특성은 확대성, 장식성, 환상성, 퓨전성으로 나타났다. 첫째, 확대성은 빅터 앤 롤프 작품의 맥시멀리즘 특성을 표현하는 가장 대표적인 특성으로, 맥시멀리즘의 사전적 의미인 ‘최대한의, 극대의’란 뜻에 걸맞게 최대주의를 내세우며 표현방법에서도 형태의 확장과 과장이 주를 이루었다. 둘째, 장식성은 이들 특유의 위트와 독창적인 디자인 세계를 장식적인 요소로 발전시켜 리본, 러플의 과다사용으로 나타났으며, 장식자체로 거대한 볼륨감을 표현하고 의복의 한 디테일을 과장시키거나 장식의 도구로 활용하였다. 셋째, 환상성은 틀에 박히지 않은 자유로운 상상력을 패션에 접목하여 신선한 충격을 주는 것으로 일상적인 사물이 이동한 형상의 작품은 상징적이며, 일반적인 고정관념에 충격을 주었다. 넷째, 퓨전성으로 전통적인 클래식과 전위적인 아방가르드의 믹스가 대표적인 표현방법으로 나타났다. 이와 같이 자유로운 상상력으로 실험적인 디자인을 선보이는 빅터 앤 롤프의 작품은 상상력을 기술력과 결합하여 그들의 내면세계를 표현하고 있으며 그것을 표현하는 방법으로 과도함과 극단을 사용함을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 실험적 시도가 계속되어 더욱 창의적이고 기발한 디자인을 위한 다양한 시도가 활발하게 이루어지길 기대한다.
