This study aims to examine whether the R&D investment affects the firm’s business performance. Subject of the study are listed companies which have a head office or a factory in Chungbuk between 2007 and 2010. In addition, this study also examines the distinctions between the effects of the R&D investment on the business performance depending on the market and the scale the companies belong to. First, current R&D expenses and R&D expenses two years before have positively significant effects on firm’s performance. Second, in the Kospi market, R&D expenses two years before have significant effects on firm’s performance. In the Kosdaq market, both current R&D expenses and R& D investment two years before have significant effects on firm’s performance. Lastly, R&D expenses of large firms do not significantly affect on firm’s performance, but R&D expenses of small and medium firms have significant effect on firm’s performance. The results indicate that the R&D investment is required to procure the competitive power of the company. However, companies in Chungbuk face crisis in global economic crisis such as U.S. credit downgrade and the financial crisis in Europe. In this financial crisis, it is anticipated that the R&D investment will be reduced. From a long-term point of view, not only companies give efforts but also government and local government should support companies to secure the competitive power.

본 연구는 2007년부터 2010년까지의 기간에 충북지역에 본사나 공장을 둔 상장기업을 대상으로 연구개발비 지출이 경영성과에 영향을 미치는지를 시차분석을 통하여 실증적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 실증결과에 따르면 첫째, 전체 표본기업을 대상으로 분석한 결과 당기의 연구개발비 지출은 5%수준에서 통계적으로 유의적인 양(+)의 관계를 나타내었으며 분석대상 연도 2년 전(-2)기의 연구개발비는 1%수준에서 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 나타냈다. 둘째, 시장구분에 따른 추가 분석에서는 코스피시장에서 분석대상 연도 2년 전(-2기)의 연구개발비 지출이, 코스닥시장에서 당기와 분석대상 연도 2년 전(-2기)의 연구개발비 지출이 각각 10%와 5%수준에서 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 나타냈다. 그리고 기업규모에 따른 분석에서는 대기업의 경우 당기와 분석대상 연도 2년 전(-2기)에서 양(+)의 값을 보였으나 통계적으로는 유의하지 않았으며 중소기업의 경우 분석대상 연도 2년 전(-2기)의 연구개발비 지출이 1% 수준에서 통계적으로 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 나타냈다. 이러한 연구 결과들은 기업의 경쟁력확보를 위한 방안으로 장기적인 관점에서 연구개발투자가 필요하다는 것이다. 하지만 최근 충북지역의 기업들은 글로벌 신용위기의 파장이 채 가시지도 않은 상황에서 미국의 신용등급하락 및 유럽의 재정위기 확산 등 새로운 위기에 처하게 되었다. 이 같은 위기 상황은 연구개발에 대한 기업들의 투자를 위축시킬 것으로 예상되어 진다. 따라서 기업의 단기적 실적보다는 보다 장기적인 관점에서 경쟁력을 확보할 수 있도록 기업의 노력 뿐 아니라 정부 및 지자체 차원에서 적극적인 정책적 지원을 해야 함을 시사한다.
