This study aims to examine early childhood education teachers’understanding of child initiative and its practical meaning at the field level. To meet the goal, various subject related journals written by 10 teachers from Seoul and the Metropolitan area were reviewed as well as data from 4 group interviews. The result of the study suggests that the teachers had first perceived child initiative as child’s individuality, however, gradually broadened its understanding of the initiativeas active participation to play and attitude to life. In addition to that, in terms of practice of education, such change of the perception has recomposed teacher-led practice to practice of trusting and respecting children and practice of aspiring learning community that combines both intentions of children and teachers. Through this process, the teachers were given with an opportunity to reconsider the meaning of educational practice by widening their understanding of value and concept in child education. Also the result of the study again emphasized the importance of practical knowledge as to bridge educational value and practice.

본 연구는 교사들이 유아교육현장에서 구성하고 있는 유아의 주도성에 대한 인식과 유아 주도성의 실천적 의미를 알아보는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 서울과 수도권에 소재한 유아교육기관에서 근무하는 유아교사 10명이 작성한 유아의 주도성에 대한 저널들 그리고 4회의 집단 면담 자료들이 분석되었다. 연구 결과, 교사들은 연구 초기에 유아의 주도성을 개별 유아의 성향으로 인식하다가 점차 놀이의 능동적인 참여로서, 그리고 삶의 태도로서 주도성에 대한 인식의 지평을 넓혀나갔다. 아울러 이러한 인식의 변화는 교육 실천적 측면에서 교사주도적 실천에 대한 반성에서 출발하여 유아를 존중하고 유아의 능력을 믿는 실천으로, 그리고 유아의 의도와 교사의 의도가 통합된 학습공동체를 지향하는 실천 등의 의미로 재구성되었다. 이러한 과정을 통해 교사들은 유아교육에서 추구하는 가치나 개념에 대한 인식을 확장하면서 교육적 실천에 대해 재고하는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 아울러 교육적 가치와 실천을 연결하기 위한 실천적 지식의 중요성을 다시 한번 제안하였다.
