The purpose of this study is to analyze the structural relationship among formal multicultural education, foreign language ability, multicultural-media, and self-esteem. In order to achieve this objective, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on 628 fifth and sixth grade students at the Daegu metropolitan area. The statistical method employed for data analysis was the structural equation modeling (SEM) method by the AMOS 5.0 program. The goodness of fit was evaluated as appropriate. The findings of the study were as follows: First, formal multicultural education was statistically insignificant, however, it indirectly influenced multicultural awareness by having a strong effect on self-esteem. Second, foreign language ability directly influenced multicultural awareness and also had an indirect effect on multicultural awareness by influencing self-esteem. Third, multicultural media had not only a large effect on multicutural awareness but also directly and indirectly influenced fomal multicultural education, foreign language ability and self-esteem. Forth, self-esteem had a large impact on multicultural awareness, especially since it indirectly influenced multicultural awareness by having effects on formal multicultural education, foreign language ability and multicultural media. In conclusion, teachers should make an effort to develop better curriculum by considering the effects from formal multicultural education, foreign language ability, multicultural media and self-esteem as well as deliberate the structural relationship among them.

본 연구의 목적은 일반가정 학생들의 다문화인식에 영향을 미치는 형식적 다문화교육, 외국어 능력, 다문화 관련 미디어, 자아존중감 간의 구조적 관계를 분석하여 초등학생을 위한 다문화교육의 방향을 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 대구광역시 소재 초등학교 5, 6학년에 재학 중인 628명을 연구 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 AMOS 5.0 프로그램을 활용하여 구조방정식모형 분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, 형식적 다문화교육은 다문화인식에 직접적으로 미치는 영향이 통계적으로 유의하지 않았으나, 자아존중감에 영향력을 행사하여 다문화인식에 간접적인 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 외국어 능력은 다문화인식에 직접적인 영향을 주었고, 자아존중감을 매개로 간접적으로 다문화인식에 영향을 주었다. 셋째, 다문화 관련 미디어는 다문화 인식에 직접적으로 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤으며 형식적 다문화 교육, 외국어 능력, 자기존중감에도 직․간접적인 영향을 주었다. 넷째, 자아존중감은 다문화인식에 높은 영향력을 행사하였으며, 특히 형식적 다문화교육, 외국어 능력, 다문화 관련 미디어가 다문화인식에 영향을 주는 매개요인의 역할을 하였다. 이러한 결과는 일반가정 학생들의 다문화인식 개선을 위해 형식적 다문화교육, 외국어 능력, 다문화 관련 미디어, 자아존중감의 효과적인 활용이 필요함을 시사한다.
