The Early Modern ages “Sooyeon” is a travel record that systematically delivers his geographic knowledge and, concurrently, a modern book that compiles knowledge enabling establishing a modern state. The concept of a state established by geography provides specific facts about states, territory and national land of this era, and encourages Joseon (then Korea) people to modernize the country. In addition, Choe Nam-seon's “Sooyeon” emphasizes that geography is important knowledge contributing to modernizing and strengthening a country, and a great advantage helping Korea overcome the crisis that it faced at that time. Travelling across the country as acceptance and distribution of geography plays a role in strengthening the symbolic meaning of the country and its territory as a repository of modern knowledge. Choe also shows that geographic knowledge and travels are not only personal experiences, but also fundamental component to establish a modern state.

이 논문은 근대 초기 지리학과 여행담론들이 국가담론 안에서 생산되고 유포되었다는 것 을 최남선의 발행한 󰡔소년󰡕을 중심으로 논의하였다. 최남선은 이 잡지를 통해 지리학적 지식 을 체계적으로 전달하는 한편 국토여행기를 통해 조선의 지도를 그리고 있고, 이것은 국가개 념과 영토․국토의 개념을 형성하는데 기여했다고 할 수 있다. 최남선의 󰡔소년󰡕은 지리 지식 이 국가의 부강과 문명화에 기여할 수 있는 학문이며, 해상국가로서의 장점이 현재 위기상황 을 극복할 수 있는 요소임을 강조한다. 지리학의 실질적인 수용과 확산으로서의 국토여행은 근대 지식체계를 구성하며 국가와 영토의 표상을 공고히 하는 역할을 수행하고 있다. 지리학 은 상상된 국가를 대신하여 사실적인 세계에 기반을 두고 ‘영토’, ‘주권’, ‘국민’을 제시하고 있 으며, 이러한 최남선의 ‘국가’주의에는 영토․국토의 기반이 없이는 국가주권을 확보할 수 없 는 것이었다. 『소년』을 통한 지리지식의 유포와 이것을 사실화하는 것으로서의 국토여행기는 국가체제의 구축과 함께 영토 귀속성을 공고히 하는 역할을 담당했다고 하겠다.
