The reason is that a historical drama is created based on historical facts, society, and characters. Hence, an antagonist who stands in opposition to the hero should interact with the hero in subtle, concrete, and dynamic relationships. Therefore, as we have seen above, in a historical drama the identity of the antagonist is not set up as an evil, pure and simple. Accordingly, we have to seek for a history drama wherein the position and the perspective of each side stand in opposition, and yet both sides represent good rather than a simple confrontation between good and evil. The kind of story that reflects diverse human characters and social strata, wherein antagonistic positions of each side are well balanced in tension, can only be found when one deviates from a simple good and evil structure. At the same time, efforts should be made to fully reflect historical facts in such a way that the historical background, actual personalities, and the intellectual milieu of the time are not distorted in the drama.

사극은 역사적 사실과 사회, 인물을 기반으로 만들어진다. 따라서 주인공과 대립하는 악역들은 구체적이고 미묘한 역학관계 속에서 주인공과 상호작용을 해야 한다. 주인공을 부각시키기고 역사적 현실의 복잡함을 표현하기 위해서는 적대자를 비중 있게 설정해야한다. 때문에 현대의 사극에서는 앞서 살펴본 바와 같이 적대자의 정체성을 악으로만 설정하지 않는다. 현대 사극에서 적대자는 인간미 있고 매력 넘치는 인물로 설정되고, 거기에 악인의 요소를 덧붙여 나감으로써 극적 효과를 만들어 내고 있다. 사회가 복잡하고 다양 해질수록 단순 선악 대립구도의 틀 속에서 부여된 적대자의 위상이나 성격으로는 대중들과의 공감대를 형 성할 수가 없다. 따라서 단순한 선악의 대립이 아닌 모두가 선일 수 있는, 각자의 입장과 관점이 대립하는 사극을 모색해야 한다. 현대사회의 다양한 인간상과 다양한 계층을 반영하고, 각각의 대립된 입장이 긴장 감 속에서 조화되는 스토리는 사극의 단순한 선악구도 탈피에서 찾을 수 있다. 아울러 역사적 사실을 충 분히 반영하여 사극 속 시대 배경과 실존인물, 그리고 당시의 이념이 왜곡되지 않도록 해야 한다.
