This study aims to figure out the status of philosophical thought of Yulgok-School in the Confucian history of Choseon and its specific image with Yulgok in its center.
Yulgok-School succeeded in practical oriented view of study, pragmatic governing view and open and self-apprehending attitude of learning that is shown in the philosophy of Yulgok. It stresses philosophical exploration based on rational world view to secure public benefit of ethical practice, minute theorizing work for moral emotion and ethical practice to realize moral characteristics. Such characteristics of Yulgok philosophy underwent a variation in the process of periodical transformation.
In this article, I point out limitation of dealing with Yulgok-School in terms of Giho-School boundary according to conventional researches and suggest the method of figuring it out in accordance with specific academic genealogy and tradition of the school. Through genealogical study the ‘genealogical system’ can be confirmed, and ‘academic tradition’ can be visualized according to methodology to make a pattern of academic tendency.
Accordingly, I suggest the change of Yulgok-School in the table by Database work, and embodies specific image of Yulgok-School through the manufacturing diagram of its genealogy. With the study and review of academic genealogy and tradition of Yulgok-School, I draw results as follows. First, Yulgok-School made a reasonable and emotional approach to the ‘reality of life’ and ‘matters of their times,’ compared with other school to seek solution. Second, such emotional thinking and practice made persons in the school to regard themselves as ‘guardians of truth’.

이 글은 율곡을 중심으로 한 율곡학파의 학맥이 조선시대 유학사의 흐름에서 갖는 위상을 검토하고 그 구체상을 고찰한 글이다. 율곡학파는 율곡철학이 보여주는 실천지향의 학문관과 무실적 경세관, 개방적이면서도 자득을 강조하는 학문태도를 계승하고, 리의 공공성을 확보하기 위하여 합리적인 세계 인식에 기초한 철학적 탐색과 도덕감정에 대한 정교한 이론화 작업 및 도덕인격 실현을 위한 윤리적 실천을 중시한다. 이러한 율곡학의 특징은 시대의 변천과정에서 변주된다.
이 논문에서 필자는 기존의 관례적인 연구방식에 따라 율곡학파를 기호학의 범주에서 논의하는 한계를 지적하고 구체적인 학맥과 학풍의 전개 양상에 따라 학파를 구획할 것을 제안한다. 즉 학맥연구를 통하여 ‘학맥의 계통도’를 확정하고, 학맥의 학문적 경향을 패턴화하는 연구방법론을 통해 ‘학풍’이 가시화될 수 있다는 것이다.
따라서 필자는 율곡학파의 인물 변화양상을 DB화 작업을 통해 도표로 제시함으로써 실제적인 위상을 확인하고, 율곡학맥도 제작 과정을 통해 율곡학파의 구체상을 실증한다. 율곡학맥에 대한 기초연구와 학풍의 검토를 통하여 필자는 다음과 같은 결론을 도출한다. 첫째, 율곡학파는 다른 여타의 학파에 비견하여 그들이 처한 ‘삶의 현실’과 ‘시대의 문제’에 대하여 합리적으로 접근하면서도 정감에 호소하는 해결책을 모색하였으며, 둘째, 그러한 감성적 사유와 실천은 율곡학파의 인물들로 하여금 ‘진리의 수호자’임을 자임하게 하였다.
