This paper explores how presidents' leadership styles influence the nature of their foreign policy advisory systems. The framework this analysis uses builds on previous studies of how presidents have organized their relations with their advisers. According to related literature on presidential leadership style, this analysis highlights three sources to influence how presidents structure their advisory systems: 1) desire for control in policy making process, 2) sensitivity for political environment and context, 3) policy experience and expertise in foreign policy. To illustrate the frame this article examines how presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush organised and used their advisers in foreign policy making. These illustrations suggest that differences in leadership style are related to differences in the way the executive branch of government works.
