To Rem Koolhaas, Plan Libre was a primordial element of architecture and became one of the main themes of architecture during his career. For applying new geometry system, Topology, into architecture, Plan Libre has been adopted to most of his works through the studies of its function and form. It has been developed from the earlier simple functional void into several types having more complex typologies. Therefore, this study aims to understand the typologies and the aspects of evolution of Plan Libre in terms of the quality of space in the works of Rem Koolhaas. His Plan Libre can be classified into several categories by its characteristics. Furthermore, the evolution of these categories is also qualified by means of some criteria, such as in-between space, void and circulation. And analyzing these criteria, a significant point was found, that Plan Libre is not just for composition of plans but of whole space including open space. And also a certain affluence of Le Corbusier, the creator of Plan Libre, is found in several aspects. In conclusion, Plan Libre is an efficient method which controls the composition and creates emotional atmosphere in the space of Rem Koolhaas and is adopted and applied with variety.

르 코르뷔지에에 의해 창안되어 발전된 건축의 5원칙 중 하나인 자유로운 평면은 평면을 구성하는 단순한 사용으로부터 보이드를 동반하면서 층간의 수직관계에 의한 공간의 확장 및 외부공간의 구성에까지 광범위하게 사용된 이후 렘 쿨하스에 이르러 새로운 전기를 맞게 된다. 즉 그의 건축에서는 기존의 건축에서 시도하지 못하였던 대담한 형태 및 공간이 구상되며 이를 실현하기 위하여 여러 유형의 자유로운 평면이 구성되어 독특한 공간 특성을 만들어 내고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있는 것이다. 자유로운 평면은 그의 작품에서 다양하게 적용되고 있는데 그 규모와 형태의 다양함, 그리고 사용범위 등에서 그의 건축을 정의할 수 있는 하나의 건축적 요소로 볼 수 있다. 이 자유로운 평면이 어떤 배경을 가지고 나타나며 전개되고 있는지를 밝히는 것은 그의 건축을 이해하는 하나의 새로운 방법이 될 수 있을 것이며 또한 자유로운 평면 구성에 있어 르 코르뷔지에가 미친 영향과 서로간의 차이점을 살펴 자유로운 평면이 어떻게 진화되었는지를 확인할 수 있다. 이와 같이 렘 쿨하스의 건축에서 자유로운 평면의 구체적인 구성 방법을 분석함으로써 그의 건축에서 착상되어 형태 및 공간적으로 발전되는 과정을 체계적으로 정리하고 그 의미를 명확히 하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
