The purpose of this study was to examine the forgiving process of older people with the unsolved past hurts. Forgiveness made older people healing the hurts, keeping the healthy and happy life, and achieving ego-integrity easier. Their forgiving process was different from those that mentioned in the other models of interpersonal forgiveness for young adults. Five stages for older people’s forgiving process were ① Destruction of trust and Damaged self-esteem, ② Anger and Rumination, ③ Cognitive change, ④ Blossoming forgiveness, and ⑤ Deciding and Acting forgiveness. Their forgiveness was available through cognitive changes based on understanding or empathy about the offenders as well as changing environment or circumstances. The cognitive changes about the offender was available through experiences of healing the hurt (rise of children’s social-economic status to ascend, interaction with others, direct or indirect observation of others’ experience, getting worse health, observation of others’ death, retrospection and healing of life through a religion, education indirect intervention).

본고는 과거에 깊은 상처를 받고 이를 해결하지 못한 노인들의 용서과정을 살펴본 연구이다. 용서는 그 노인들에게 상처를 치료하여 건강하고 행복한 삶을 영위하도록 해주었으며, 노년기 발달과업인 긍정적 자아통합을 촉진시켜 주었다. 노년기 용서과정은 ① 신뢰감 파괴 및 자존감 손상, ② 분노표출과 되새김, ③ 인지적 변화, ④ 용서의 마음 싹트기, ⑤ 용서결정 및 용서행동으로 정리될 수 있었는데, 이는 성인기 초기나 중기를 대상으로 한 대인용서 모형들과는 다른 특성을 보여주고 있다. 그것은 용서가 가해자의 이해와 공감뿐만 아니라 피해자의 환경 변화에 의해서 이루어졌다는 점이다. 즉 세 번째 과정인 가해자에 대한 인지적 변화가 상처치유경험(자녀의 사회경제적 지위 상승, 타인과의 상호작용이나 직·간접적 관찰, 본인 또는 타인의 건강악화, 죽음의 직·간접적 관찰, 종교를 통한 삶의 회고와 치유, 교육 등의 간접적 개입)에 의해 가능했다. 또 용서의 마음이 싹튼 이후에도 상처의 되새김과 분노가 지속되었지만, 용서의 마음이 생기기 이전보다는 더 짧고 상대방에 대한 연민도 나타났다. 본고에서는 노년기의 용서가 다른 연령층을 대상으로 한 기존의 모형과는 다른 특성을 보여주기 때문에 노년기 용서과정의 모
형에 대한 다양한 접근이 필요함을 제안하였다.
