This study traces the Spanish creation of the word ‘race’ in socio-historial context and aims to find the reason for it and to show the way multi-cultural education goes for. In the early 14th century Spanish Christians successfully expelled Muslims from their former territory, completed the Spanish Re-conquest and took the political leadership. On the basis of this they spread anti-Judaism and took the economic initiative away from the Jews. However in the 1400s a large number of the Jews converted to Christianity and recovered their great status in the socio-economic world. This made the Spanish Christians seek for the reason for anti-Semitism to exclude the Jews. They made the word ‘race’ derived from the word ‘Raza’ which means the breed of animal and discriminated the Jews, insisting that Jews were biologically different from them and inferior to them. Like this in the word of ‘race’ socio-economic motives for justifying the discrimination against others are concealed. Therefore in multi-cultural education it is required to help students to understand clearly the reason for racial discrimination and to find ways to achieve social justice, besides helping them to have considerate attitudes toward social minorities(others).

본 논문의 목적은 인종 용어 창안 과정을 사회사적으로 접근함으로써 인종 용어 창안 원인을 밝히고, 다문화 교육에서 타자 이해교육의 방향을 제시하는데 있다. 14세기 초엽 스페인 기독교도들은 이슬람을 축출하는 스페인 재정복운동을 성공적으로 완료하여 정치적 주도권을 회복하였다. 이를 기반으로 스페인 기독교도들은 반유대교주의를 강화하면서 경제적 주도권을 유대인들로부터 빼앗았다. 그러나 1400년 무렵 유대인들이 기독교로 대규모로 개종함으로써 사회·경제면에서 상층부를 형성하였다. 이제 반유대교주의로서는 유대인에게 빼앗긴 경제적 주도권을 되돌릴 수 없게 되었다. 이러한 상황 변화는 반유대인주의라는 새로운 인식을 요청하였다. 스페인 기독교도들은 이전 시기 동물의 종자 의미로 사용하던 ‘라자(Raza)’라는 용어를 원용하여, 인종이라는 용어를 만들어 생물학적으로 자신들과 다른 유대인을 열등한 인종으로 규정하면서 유대인 차별의 근거로 이용했다. 이처럼 인종 개념에는 사회경제적 경쟁관계에서 타자를 배제하기 위해 차별을 정당화하고자 하는 사회경제적 동기가 내재되어 있다. 따라서 다인종사회에서 반인종 교육은 단순히 타자를 배려하는 윤리적 교육 못지않게 인종차별의 원인이 사회·경제적 갈등 구조에서 비롯됨을 이해하게 하는 교육이 필요하다.
