Positive psychology is the study of the human positive aspects such as happiness, growth, self fulfillment and good character. It is an important task in positive psychology to search for the positive traits contributing to happiness and well-being. VIA Classification of Character Strengths and Virtues is the classification of the universal and objective positive traits through massive empirical research and investigation. VIA Classification is comprised of six virtues and 24 character strengths affiliated with the virtues. The six virtues are wisdom(knowledge), courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. The VIA Classification has the significant implications of moral education as follows; defending virtue education for the whole person, strengthening the positivity and the scientific approach in moral education. The analysis of the 2009 national curriculum of middle school shows that the study elements of moral education are directly or indirectly connected with the most of VIA character strengths such as self-regulation, integrity, persistence, social intelligence, love, kindness, fairness, open-mindedness, citizenship, appreciation of beauty, forgiveness, and others.

이 연구의 목적은 긍정심리학의 성격 강점에 관한 연구 성과를 도덕교육에 활용하기 위한 예비 단계로서 2009 개정 중학교 도덕과 교육과정을 분석하는 것이다. 긍정심리학은 행복, 성장, 자기실현, 좋은 인격 등 인간의 긍정적인 측면을 과학적으로 규명하는 학문이다. ‘VIA 성격 강점과 덕목의 분류 체계’는 방대한 경험과학적인 연구를 통해 시대와 지역을 넘어 인간을 행복하고 풍요롭게 하는 보편적인 인격 특질을 밝혀낸 것이다. 이것은 지혜, 용기, 인간애, 정의, 절제, 초월의 6개 덕목과 그에 속한 24개의 성격 강점으로 구성되어 있는데, 이 덕목과 강점은 모두 윤리학의 덕(德)에 해당되는 것이다. ‘성격 강점과 덕목의 분류 체계’는 통합적 인격교육으로서의 덕 교육이 가능하다는 것을 보여주고 있으며, 도덕교육에서 실증적 접근을 강조함으로써 도덕교육의 과학적 접근성을 높여주고 있다. 그리고 ‘성격 강점과 덕목의 분류 체계’는 도덕에서 행복, 자기실현 등을 강조함으로써 의무와 금지로 상징되는 도덕에 대한 부정적 인상을 감소시킬 수 있다. 2009 개정 중학교 도덕과 교육과정을 분석한 결과, 교육과정상의 학습 요소는 자기 조절, 진실성, 인내, 사회성, 사랑, 친절, 공정성, 개방성, 시민의식, 심미안, 용서 등 대부분의 성격 강점과 직․간접적으로 관련된다.
