The number of Koreans in Japan who marry Japanese saw a steady increase since the 1970s. From the year 1992, more than 80% of married Koreans in Japan married Japanese. Marriages between Japanese men and Korean women have been far more frequent than those between Japanese women and Korean men. A marriage pattern like this, it has been widely believed within Korean communities in Japan, is an inevitable consequence of the settlement of Korean residents in Japan and, inevitable as it is, would turn itself into a norm. Against this backdrop, an increase of interest among Korean women in Japan in “national marriages,” a trend emerging from about early 2000s, seems to signal an interesting change of marriage patterns among the said group. Especially noteworthy is Activities for Marriage (‘Konkatsu’). Having launched in 2008, it vitalized marriage business targeting Koreans in Japan. Korean women in their 30s have been its chief customers. This dissertation approaches this interest among Korean women in national marriages as an outcome of strengthening “intraethnic marriage norms,” a phenomenon that in turn has to be understood in the contexts of individuation of Japanese society in general and accelerating globalization of East Asia. Marriage activities that put ethnicity in their center bring these women in their thirties to a larger phenomenon of “Korean diaspora,” a part of South Korea’s strategy for globalization, to become a part of it. Seen in this light, they form a new current in diaspora in which reproductions of individuals and families are central.

1970년대 이후 일본인과 결혼하는 재일조선인은 꾸준히 증가하여 1992년부터는 총 혼인 건수의 80% 이상을 차지하게 되었다. 특히 일본인 남성과 재일조선인 여성의 국제결혼은 일본인 여성과 재일조선인 남성의 결합 건수를 크게 앞질렀으며 재일조선인 사회는 이를 정주화에 따른 필연적인 결과이며 돌이킬 수 없는 대세로 여겨왔다. 이런 상황을 배경으로 볼 때 2000년을 전후한 재일조선인 여성들의 동포결혼에 대한 관심의 증가는 흥미로운 현상이다. 특히 2008년부터 시작된 일본의 ‘혼활’ 유행은 재일조선인 사회의 동포결혼사업의 활성화를 가져왔으며 이 사업의 주 고객층은 30대 여성들이었다. 본 논문은 이 여성들의 동포결혼에 대한 관심 증가를 일본사회의 개인화(individuation)와 동아시아의 세계화라는 맥락 속에서 내혼 규범이 강화된 결과라는 관점에서 접근한다. 이들 30대 여성들의 ‘민족(ethnicity)’을 매개로 한 결혼활동은 세계화 전략의 일환으로 ‘코리안 디아스포라’를 호명하고 있는 한국 측의 움직임과 결합하여 개인과 가족의 재생산이 중심이 된 새로운 디아스포라의 흐름을 만들어 가고 있는 것이다.
