Textbooks are defined as 'the necessary books for the subjects of the school curriculum'. These books are characterized by standard language and knowledge. So the material in textbooks are very useful for the studies of language, education and others areas of study. This paper aims to describe the trends relating to studies of textbooks during the modern Enlightenment times in Korea. In 1895, the school system was established in Korea. So many textbooks were compiled by the Hakboo-the department of government-, educational groups and individual writers. It is naturally divisible into three distinct periods based on the precedent studies on the history of Korean Modern Enlightenment Period. This periodization is as follows; (1) Pre-School Systems Period(1880-1895) (2) Introduction of school system(1896-1905) (3) Oppression of the Japan Residency-General(1906-1910) I divided the trends into three parts. First, basic studies research on the actual condition regarding the compilation of textbooks. This trend appeared in 1970's but is not sufficient now. Second, from the history of Korean language's viewpoint, many scholars were interested in the styles of Modern Enlightenment Times. They focused on lexical expression especially. Third, the educational fields were divided into two parts, one is the contents of textbooks and the other is subject matter education.

이 연구는 근대 계몽기의 교과서를 대상으로 한 교육사, 국어 교육사, 국어사적 연구 경향을 살피고자 한 목적을 가지고 있다. 근대 계몽기(1880~1910)의 교과서는 학제 도입 이전과 학제 도입기, 통감 시대에 이르기까지 다양한 변화를 보인다. 이 시기 발행된 교과서는 대략 430종에 이르는데, 기존의 연구에서는 국어사의 연구 대상으로 한정하여 연구하는 경향이 있었다. 이 점에서 이 연구는 근대 계몽기의 교과서 변천 과정을 세 시기로 구분하여, 국어사, 교과 교육사의 관점에서 어떻게 연구되어 왔는지를 살피고자 하였다. 선행 연구를 종합해 볼 때, 근대 계몽기의 교과서는 이 시기의 국어 및 교육과 관련하여 중요한 연구 자료가 된다. 그런데 대부분의 선행 연구에서는 이 시기 교과서에 대한 기초 연구가 충분하지 않아서 체계적이고 종합적인 교과서 연구가 이루어졌다고 보기는 어렵다. 이를 고려하여 이 논문에서는 서지 및 기초 연구, 국어사 분야에서의 연구, 교과 교육학 분야에서의 연구 경향을 정리하고자 하였다.
