This study aims to survey the main bone of contention in the study of Gae-hwa-gi's novel(開化期 小說) and to make a full list of it. This paper will suggest the new way for the study of history of Korean language. Furthermore it will help and encourage interdisciplinary research between Korean language and literature. The “Gae-hwa-gi's novel” in this paper means the novel that published in newspapers, magazines or books from 1896 to August in 1910. The name of “Sin-so-seol(新小說)” at existing study is improper to explain the novels of that period. The boundary of “Gae-hwa-gi's novel” should be extended to the short narrative, the novel written in Chinese, and the novel of unknown authorship etc. My list of “Gae-hwa-gi's novel” was made in view of this thought. I hope that my list help many historians of Korean language to search and select the text for studying. I also hope that historians of Korean language will establish the correlation between the modern novel and the writing in the vernacular.

본고에서는 기존 개화기 소설 연구에서의 논쟁적인 문제들을 살펴보고, 지금까지의 연구의 성과를 통해 보다 종합적인 개화기 소설 목록을 작성하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 통해 개화기 소설의 목록들이 국어사 연구에 기여할 수 있는 바를 모색하고, 또한 이것이 개화기 소설 연구에서 참조할 수 있는 바를 발견하기 위한 토대를 마련하고자 하였다. 이 논문에서 ‘개화기 소설’은 1896년부터 1910년 8월 이전까지 신문, 잡지, 단행본으로 발표된 작품들을 대상으로 하였다. 그리고 개화기 소설 자료에 대한 검토를 하기 전에 기존 개화기 소설 연구에서 가장 쟁점이 되어 온 세 가지 문제, ‘신소설’이라는 명칭, ‘단형서사’의 문제, 최초의 개화기 소설 등에 대해 연구사를 검토하고, 이에 대한 정리를 시도하였다. 이를 바탕으로 개화기 소설의 목록을 작성해 나갔다. 목록화의 일차적 대상은 ‘소설’, ‘신소설’, ‘단편소설’ 등의 표제를 달고 발표된 텍스트들이었다. 그러나 신문의 경우 ‘소설’이라는 표지가 없더라도 문학적 서사 양식으로서의 특성이 뚜렷이 보이는 경우에는 소설 목록에 포함시켰다. 이러한 목록화를 통해 목표하는 바는, 이들 텍스트를 ‘소설’이라는 의식 하에 국어학적으로 고찰하는 것이다. 특히 1900~1910년대를 거치며 형성되어 간 ‘자국어 글쓰기’의 ‘전범’이 무엇이 되었는지, 소설의 언어적 특질이 어떠한 것이었는지, 이 과정에서 가장 크게 영향을 끼친 것이 전대의 문학(소설) 개념ㆍ서구의 소설 양식(문예이론)ㆍ독자에 대한 고려ㆍ글쓰기의 목적(주제의식) 등 중에서 무엇인지 등을 밝히기 위해 이 목록에 대한 국어학계의 관심을 기대한다.
