positioning the dialect of Ganzhou through the evolution of its ancient consonant *ng- Ganzhou is a dialect island. This paper studies our understanding about the position of the dialect of Ganzhou through its evolution of ancient consonant *ng-. The evolutionary direction of this ancient consonant in the Ganzhou dialect is three: ng-, n-, and consonant zero, without any regular phonetic conditions of change. As the same correspondence of this evolution is shown in the Late Ming and Early Qing Guanhua materials too, we consider it one of the marks which indicate the position of the dialect of Ganzhou.
