The Effects of Adolescents' Adjustment Factors on Internet Addiction

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of adolescent adjustment factors (attachment to parent, school life adjustment, depression, self-control) on internet addiction and the relative significance of those factors. The subjects were 400(222 male, 178 female) middle school students at Y gun in Jeonnam province. They completed the Internet Addiction Questionnaire (K-Questionnaire), Korean version of IPPA-R(Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Revision), School Life Adjustment Questionnaire, Children's Depression Inventory and Self-Control Questionnaire. The results were as follows: first, gender, school achievement, and SES had significant effects on adolescent internet addiction. Second, parent attachment(parent-adolescent communication, mutual confidence, alienation) had no effects on adolescent internet addiction. However, relationship with peer and school rule had significant effects on adolescent internet addiction. Third, both depression and self-control had effects on adolescent internet addiction. Fourth, depression had the greatest effects on adolescent internet addiction followed by gender and self-control.
