Korean society was one where the war and the division had become such a part of daily life to the extent that it created a collective disposition of anti-communism. In this sort of society, the war and the division become a part of daily life within the family. The life stories of women that come from families of defectors(Wolbuk kajok)are likely to be a crucial start to the path of resolving awareness of such problems. This paper presents life stories of four women in different generations who have experienced “Wolbuk kajok” as a wife, a sister, a daughter or a granddaughter. The structure of the days and lives of these women show that the conflict and antagonistic relationship between family and ideology are complicated even further by the added issue of being female. For women of these families, while having to endure less formal control in public areas than their familymen, they in fact suffer more within the framework of the family. In this framework, these women make use of the survival strategy that entails separating “affections for their flesh-and-blood” from the ideologies. This article can be seen as a pre-study for a more active and closer interpretation and analysis of the relationship between war, families, and gender.

이 논문은 그동안 한국사회에서 드러나지 않은 월북가족 여성들의 생애 이야기에 초점을 맞춰 전쟁과 분단의 일상화를 재조명하고자 했다. 특히 세대가 다른 여성 네 명의 구술자료를 통해 세대에 걸친 전쟁과 분단의 긴 그림자를 들춰내고자 했다. 한국사회는 집단적 반공 심성을 만들어 낼만큼 전쟁과 분단이 일상화된 사회이다. 이러한 사회에서 가족 안에서의 전쟁과 분단의 일상화가 이루어지는 방식에 보다 주목할 필요가 있으며 월북가족 여성들의 생애이야기는 이러한 문제의식을 풀어낼 주요한 단서가 될 수 있을 것이다. 여기 제시된 네명의 월북가족 여성들은 식민지 경험과 분단, 정치적인 이념대결로 인한 전쟁과 폭력으로 각인된 한국사회의 복잡성을 세대에 걸쳐, 그리고 세대에 따라 다르게 드러내고 있다. 월북가족 여성들의 경우 남성들보다는 공공영역에서 공식적인 통제를 덜 받는 반면, 오히려 가족이라는 테두리 안에서 더 극심하게 고통 받는다.이 속에서 이들은‘혈육의 정’과 이념을 분리시키는 생존 전략을 구사한다. 이들의 생애와 일상은 가족과 이념의 경합, 또는 길항관계 위에 여성이라는 젠더적 위치까지 더해져서 더욱 복잡한 방식으로 직조되고 있음을 보여준다.
